Susanne Abbuehl

Susanne Abbuehl (* July 30 1970 in Bern, canton of Berne, Switzerland) is a Swiss jazz singer who performs in various jazz mediums like Progressive jazz, avant-garde jazz, Continental jazz, and post bop.
As a child she got lessons in harpsichord, playing baroque music. At the age of 17 she went to Los Angeles where she went to a High School attending music lessons on a daily base. After having finished her studies at the "Royal Conservatoire" of The Hague, Netherlands (a.o. with Jeanne Lee and Rachel Gould ) earning a Master's Degree, she began teaching Jazz-singing at the music colleges of Basel and Luzern. She went to India several times to study classical Indian singing with renowned Dr. Prabha Atre.
In 2001 her CD "April" was released at German Label ECM. Since then, she tours with her band and other leading jazzmusicians through Europe, North America and Africa, playing a.o. in Montreal, Maputo, Capetown, Rome, Paris, Zurich, Oslo and other European cities. In May 2006 her new CD "Compass" was released on ECM, (o.a. with Michel Portal).
In her work, influences of classical music and traditional European music can be found. Her artistic identiy is characterized by reduction to minimalistic instrumentation and arrangements.
