[edit] Fictional character biography
Surtur is native to the extradimensional plane of Asgard and is the mortal enemy of the Asgardian ruler Odin and his son Thor. Surtur and the ice demon Ymir are older, and therefore more powerful, immortals than Odin and Thor, who are always hard pressed to defeat them. [1]
Thousands of years later, the Sons of Satannish briefly call Surtur and Ymir to Earth, before they are banished again by the Avengers.[2]
The Asgardians' greatest battle against Surtur occurs during the creative run of Walt Simonson. Surtur begins by forging Twilight, a huge magical blade. He then sends his legions of fire demons to Earth, to draw Asgard's armies away from the city. Surtur then crosses Bifrost Bridge, and thinking Asgard unattended intends to destroy the city once and for all. Odin, Thor and his adopted brother Loki, however, make a last stand and eventually defeat Surtur - at the cost of Odin, who falls with his foe into a dimensional rift. [3] Surtur apparently dies once and for all during the final Ragnarok when Thor manages to break the cycle. [4]
The alien Beta Ray Bill briefly visits the ruins of Asgard after the final Ragnarok, and sees Surtur's massive form falling from the sky. Surtur is still clutching Twilight, although the sword is broken during Bill's battle with the demon Asteroth. [5]
When Thor returns to life and begins to restore the Asgardians, he enters the Odinsleep and finds Odin in a sort of limbo between life and death, where it is revealed that Surtur stored a portion of his essence in limbo to prevent himself from being killed at Ragnarok. Odin and Surtur will do battle every day for the rest of eternity, with both being vanquished each day, and being reborn the following morning.[6]
[edit] Powers and abilities
Surtur is depicted as an immense and malevolent being whose power is of apocalyptic proportions that challenges Odin himself. Surtur possesses strength and durability surpassing that of Thor; the ability to generate intense heat, flames or concussive force; manipulation of magic and molecules; reshape his body; levitation and inter-dimensional travel. Surtur also possesses a monstrous sword called Twilight, capable of creating rifts in entire dimensions.
