Surrural is a term first used by the American singer-songwriter Tom Waits to describe a kind of music that he and wife Kathleen Brennan have attempted to create: "Kathleen and I came up with this idea of doing music that's surrural -- it's surreal and it's rural, it's surrural" [1][2]. The term has subsequently been used to more accurately describe the music genres commonly known as either Alternative country or Roots rock [3], and has appeared in other disciplines [4] and languages, as well [5].
