The Sur Dynasty was founded by the powerful Afghan conqueror Sher Shah, (whose real name was Farid Khan) after he defeated Mughal Emperor Humayun in the 1539 Battle of Chausa. The dynasty was made-up of Afghans, ethnic Turks.[1][2][3][4][5] They ruled Delhi Sultanate between 1540 and 1555/1556. Ibn Batuta mentions them as a related tribe or house of the Turkic Khiljis.[citation needed] Their rule came to and end by a defeat that led to restoration of the Mughal Empire.
Today, the Suris are part of the Pashtun tribal system and belong to the sub-groups of the Ghilzais.
