Suri (flower)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suri is the Persian adjective for red. See Chaharshanbe Suri (the last Wednesday before the Persian New Year, or noruz). Chaharshanbe Suri literally means Red Wednesday (Chaharshanbe being Wednesday, and Suri being the adjective red). The word, used alone refers, to the red-toned damasc rose, Rosa damascena. The word is used as a given name.

Suri in Persian is much more commonly interpreted as a celebration, joyful gathering or festivity. Such interpretation is specially evident in Chaharshanbe Suri much more so than "red" as suggested. In a remote sense "Suri" may be interpreted as "Red Rose", which still may not be connected to Chaharshanbe Suri.
