Surfers Paradise is a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 1990 and achieved great success in Australia.
Trained by Dave and Paul O'Sullivan, Surfers Paradise won three Group 1 races in New Zealand and one in Australia in his three year-old year, a year in which he had 13 starts for 10 wins. His major New Zealand victories came in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas, a strong running of the New Zealand Derby and the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes against the older horses.
He then crossed the Tasman and won the Rosehill Guineas at his first Australian start, before finishing a slightly disappointing sixth in the AJC Derby.
He started his four year-old season with some wonderful performances at Hawke's Bay, finishing second to Rough Habit in the Mudgway Stakes and to Castletown in the Kelt Capital Stakes before heading back to Australia, where he had probably his greatest career victory. In the 1991 Cox Plate he beat the great Super Impose by a length to win Australia's most prestigious weight-for-age race.
Surfers Paradise was the third New Zealand Derby winner to pass the $2 million mark, after Bonecrusher and Castletown.
