Surabaya International School

The Surabaya International School in Surabaya, Indonesia, is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool (age 3 by first of November) through grade 12. The school, founded in 1971, is established by a foundation (Yayasan). The school year comprises 4 quarters extending from late August to mid-October, mid-October to mid-December, mid-January to mid-March, and mid-March to early June. At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year, enrollment was 211 (PS-grade 12). In August 2006, Surabaya International School became one of Indonesia's first wireless, laptop schools.[citation needed]

The curriculum and materials adapted U.S. based education with some modifications. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredits the School.[citation needed] Surabaya International School is the only school in Surabaya certified by an accrediting agency of the United States.[citation needed] For motivated students, the school offers a competitive Advanced Placement (AP) program. Success in this program could provide students with "advanced standing" at universities.

The school opened its campus in 1995, located in a new housing and recreation development west of Surabaya, about 15 kilometers (or a 30 minute drive) from the city core. The campus has 48 classrooms with semi-private teacher's offices and storage facilities. There are 4 computer labs, 3 science labs, demonstration rooms, "Little Theater," a photography lab and a library. The school has approximately 175 computers available for student and faculties, located in the library, computer labs and classrooms.

Other facilities include a gymnasium with a climbing wall and stage, a fitness center, a 50-meter Olympic size swimming pool, a full size track and a soccer field, an elementary playgrounds, a library, teacher's lounge and work rooms, and a food court. The building's capacity is approximately 600 students.
