[edit] Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia.

Here are some tasks you can do:

You might find these links helpful in creating new pages or helping with the above tasks: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

Take Care

[edit] Re: Deanna Laney

I have restored Deanna Laney as I feel your speedy justification was invalid. If you disagree, please use AFD rather than speedying again. Superm401 - Talk 04:56, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

I will be AfDing this article. However, for future circumstances, please follow this before undeleting a biography of living person which has been deleted due to concerns included in said policy. Daniel 05:01, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
One might reasonably submit that the community's interpretation of BLP has across the past five months changed sufficiently (as) to render certain principles of the Bdj case to be without grounding in policy, such that certain principles ought to be regarded as superseded and forceless, although it is probably correct to suggest that the community ought to make a clearer statement on the summary overturning of BLP-motivated speedy deletions before we explicitly change our practice. [edit] Philly meetup 6

I'm working on planning the sixth Philadelphia meetup, and I'm looking for ideas and votes about the place and location. Since you RSVP'd for the last one I thought you might like to weigh in. Thanks, and I hope to see you there! --TexasDex 22:50, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:CTRShield.svg)

Thanks for uploading Image:CTRShield.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 03:32, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Bupropion.svg

Hi Superm401, I have removed your bupropion structure from the bupropion article. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemistry/Structure drawing for the guidelines and detailed instructions for drawing proper chemical structures, diagrams, and reaction schemes. There is also a request page for chemical structures. Сасусlе 04:48, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] hi

im kind of in need of adoption. I also need help trying to prove that I am not a 'fake account' which one user seems to think, and has been convincing everyone of the same thing. I need to be taught more about wikipedia, and was hoping you could please adopt me. Thanks Pollypenhouse (talk) 15:15, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

I would consider adopting you if you were unblocked and acted in good faith, but I will not take sides in your current dispute. Superm401 - Talk 22:59, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Superm401,

[edit] Please read articles before nominating for CSD

You recently tagged Youmex for speedy deletion as spam. Did you even bother reading the article? Exactly how is it spam? Please pay more attention to article before nominating them as this is blatantly NOT spam. I don't write spam articles. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 04:25, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lightning Reaction

If Lightning Reaction is too obscure, what do you think about a new article dedicated to shocking games (i.e. merge Shocking Tanks and Lightning Reaction)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by ParticleMan (talkcontribs) 20:55, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Iron Age Italy.png

no thanks for deleting this image after giving me 7 days' warning, over Christmas. I was the author of this map. I uploaded it at a time when it was still good enough to say "I made it". I am not sure if I still keep a copy anywhere. Can you have it undeleted please? It is rather important to several Wikipedia articles, and I certainly won't spend another half day re-drawing it. --dab (𒁳) 09:31, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please leave AIDS (computer virus)

Thank you for bringing the deletion notice to my attention. While I appreciate you going out of your way to give me a heads up, I'd suggest against removing AIDS (computer virus) and other virus articles. Please keep in mind many viruses are listed in the various lists of computer viruses, and most do not have articles. While articles on older viruses, such as AIDS, tend to not be information rich, I think they're fun to read, give a glimpse into how even the not-so-notable viruses used to work, and pique curiosity.

I would encourage proactive individuals, such as yourself, to expand these virus articles, and possibly join the Malware WikiProject. To my knowledge, the virus articles have no leading authorship, so our list of viruses grows without much content, indicating that while many are interested in virus articles, no one yet knows an efficient way to bring volumes of virus-related content into Wikipedia.

At least, by keeping articles such as AIDS, we provide something of a template for others to use when a new virus article is merited. The AIDS article is also small, and so I feel it is not much a burden on Wikipedia. In the future, please make an argument as to why you'd like to delete an article, but again, thanks for bringing this up with me. Please continue this discussion on the talk page of AIDS. I hope you remove the deletion template from AIDS.

A-Day (c)(t) 01:44, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

As I noted, my reason was notability. However, the prod has been contested by someone else, and I will not take this to AFD. Superm401 - Talk 18:15, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Not only do I think your response is lax (discussion should go on the AIDS talk page, not mine), but you also forgot to remove your notability template from the AIDS article. By your talk page, it looks like you've made a habit of meddling with articles you shouldn't. Please take responsibility for your mistakes and correct them. I expect better from an admin. A-Day (c)(t) 03:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I put my most recent response here because it was directed at you, not to editors of the AIDS article. When I first tagged AIDS (computer virus) with prod, I provided the exact reason "There is no evidence that this virus is particularly notable, among the many written." Of course, that was directed to editors of the article. Squell noticed the tag, and removed my prod nomination because he believes "Notability is a spectre that haunts all older viruses". Of course, anyone can remove a prod tag, with or without a reason, as the prod process is only meant for non-controversial deletions. When a prod tag is removed, an AFD nomination can optionally be made. In that case, of course, additional arguments and voting would be made on the AFD page. I chose not to make an AFD nomination for this article. Thus, I am making no further effort to delete it; it is therefore unnecessary for me to continue to justify why I thought it should be.
I did not add the notability template. HisSpaceResearch did, in this edit. However, I still agree the article lacks evidence of notability, and will not be removing the tag. You may, if you genuinely believe the article does provide such evidence. I have not used my admin tools in any way on this article. What I did, I did as an ordinary editor, in good faith, and in full compliance with policy. If you have concerns about other actions I have taken, please bring them up separately. Superm401 - Talk 02:14, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
My bad. Thanks for the heads up on the notability template and humoring me with a justification. In the future, I'll be careful to inspect the activity history of the article before flaming the messenger. :) Thanks again. A-Day (c)(t) 07:44, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, and no hard feelings. You may want to explain more about the relationship between AIDS and AIDS II, which will help address notability concerns for AIDS; AIDS II seems more notable. Superm401 - Talk 07:56, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Heh, AIDS II is cooler than AIDS, but both of them exploited the same DOS vulnerability. It is the underlying insight into this vulnerability that makes them both notable. Actually, if AIDS predates AIDS II, I'd think AIDS is more notable than AIDS II... That said, I think we shouldn't split hairs too much and just let the articles be. A-Day (c)(t) 08:16, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Do they actually use the same mechanism? It seems as if AIDS rewrites the EXE, and AIDS II creates a accompanying COM (which is executed instead of the EXE). Anyway, like I said, I'm done with these articles for now. Superm401 - Talk 08:20, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Egg Monsters from Mars

I saw your merge tag on Egg Monsters from Mars I did not find any comment about it on the proposed receiving article Goosebumps nor did I find a {{mergefrom}} on Goosebumps. A little research at Talk:List of Goosebumps books found that the idea of just merging the list of article into the main article was rejected, based on that I removed the tag suggesting merging one of the books into the main article. If you have questions let me know, thanks Jeepday (talk) 13:50, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Uroligheder.jpg

Why did you elect Image:Uroligheder.jpg for speedy deletion? hydrox (talk) 03:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but what do you mean "it has no source"? The uploader claims copyright to these unique images, so they are propably taken by him, and I think we can act in a good faith to this claim. The events the images are related to is evident from context on Freetown Christiania. I hope your not doing this because the images decipt rioting.. hydrox (talk) 12:48, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Uis logo trans.png

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Uis logo trans.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 22:36, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Query

I am using User:Newbyguesses/Sandbox for short drafts, or reminders and stuff. Is it sane to blank between edits, as I have been doing, or is that racking up edits to no purpose? Cheers, Newbyguesses - Talk 03:36, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I was busy and offline for a while, and had some time away at the seaside over Christmas. Good to be back though. Newbyguesses - Talk 04:25, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Non-free promotional discussion

Hello, Superm401. Since you recently contributed to the lively deletion discussion for Template:Non-free promotional, I thought I'd let you know that I've continued the discussion about this template at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content#Template:Non-free promotional. The result of the deletion discussion was to keep the template, but there are still some questions about whether the current template serves a useful purpose and how to prevent its misapplication. Please contribute to the discussion if you are interested. —Bkell (talk) 17:54, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Topics relating to User:X3210

[edit] His talk page

Please don't vandalize my talk page. It's my decision what to do with it. Not yours. Thanks. X3210 (talk) 03:46, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm not going to excuse what X3210 did to your userpages, but as he noted above, he has every right to blank his own talk page, including warnings. According to Wikipedia guidelines, this is acceptable and constitutes an acknowledgement by the user that he has read all of the material that had been posted there. The edit summaries remain as a record of any warnings that may have been posted. Matchups (talk) 19:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] His blanking of others' talk pages in retribution

Thanks for reverting X3210's vandalism of my talk page. Apparently he thinks that because I unblanked his talk page (he blanked everything, including warnings, without archiving), that gives him the right to blank mine. Superm401 - Talk 03:50, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

No worries, they did the same with my userpage, I've reported them to AIV. --Pumpmeup 03:52, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Actions taken against user

This is to let you know I have posted at AN/I that I consider the actions taken against this user to have been somewhat unfair. I understand that his actions against you were inappropriate, but I also feel that as admins you all may have acted hastily and with an inadequate understanding of policy and that the situation escalated from there. This is in response to your posting it as an example on the essay talk page re: user blanking of personal pages, I would ask that you consider deleting that reference from there. Thank you, you can reply here or on my talk page if you wish. Awotter (talk) 07:10, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

There is never a good time, I think to spend eight days in hospital. Still. I made it back, and hope to be able to continue to contribute sporadically to articles and WPspace during my recuperation (four to six weeks?). But I will be seeing a lot more of my doctor than of my watchlist for a bit. Thanks for all your help to date, in any case. Newbyguesses - Talk 19:46, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Plus

OK, so I hit the "Plus" button then, each time I go to a particular talk-page. And is there then a way to generate a customized edit summary, not the same as the header which is generated? Newbyguesses - Talk 10:17, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I usually scroll to the bottom of any talkpage, reading as I go, so then I just click on the last section when I want to start a new section, and I have the flexibility of composing any edit summary I choose. Or else I scroll back to the top, click "Plus" but am much more restricted in the choice of header and no facility to customize an edit summary. No biggie, though. Newbyguesses - Talk 10:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, and *Edit this page* is most flexible, though can take CONsiderably longer to preview and then save. (Sometimes, the hardest thing of all is to think up the most cogent Header.) Newbyguesses - Talk 10:35, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
One other thing - MOS applies to headers in article space, but headers on talkpages could "break" the MOS rules to good purpose ie. ==THIS header==, ==an ARBITRARY break==..... Newbyguesses - Talk 11:55, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

  1. Non-free images cannot be used in Userspace, User talk, Template talk etc?
  2. How is it monitored?

[edit] Re: Image source problem with Image:NIU huskies ribbon.jpg

The image came from flickr. I think (?) they license under creative commons, but I am not sure. I've seen the image on several other websites (facebook, myspace, etc), so I think fair-use definitely applies here. Although IANAL, so if you know what tag would be appropriate, or what needs to be done, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! Dr. Cash (talk) 17:44, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Northern Illinois University shooting

It seems some users want to have the article unprotected, since it is a current event and anonymous can offer useful references and edits. I don't want to contradict another admin's actions, so I ask you to check the talk page of the article. Thanks! -- ReyBrujo (talk) 18:17, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:NIU huskies ribbon.jpg

You've got to be kidding. The uploader even says it was taken from flickr. See [1], [2], [3], [4]. Whichever one of those he copied it from, all of them are tagged with incompatible licenses ... not that it really matters, since none of them can legally apply a license to the NIU logo. WP:CSD I9 says that an image can be speedy deleted provided that there is copied from a website with an incompatible license "and the uploader does not assert (other than through image tags) that it is public domain, freely licensed, fair use, or used with permission". There is no such assertion and thus the criterion applies. --B (talk) 19:00, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Reply

Sorry, I understood that you would look over my contributions to WP from time to time, to check that I am capable of compliance with WP policies and guidelines, and also whether there was any indication that I was failing to grasp the concepts (many and difficult at times) which constitute the WP way.

I put the DIFF there to give you an opportunity to comment if such were the case. The Sandbox entry is an indication of the level of familiarity, (low, but hopefully improving) that I am gaining through my experiences, (and I am spending a bit of time online at the moment while in a lot of pain from the after-affects of my operation, WP is providing an outlet which I can safely attempt while sitting reasonably comfortably in a chair). The actual material, some comments about BCBOT, are similar to other such that can be read in any number of threads at that venue, they are of no significance in themself.

They are just for study purposes (my study - I feel as if I am still at pre-school Wp-wise). But please this is just FYI, if there are no problems, then nothing need be said, and I am sorry for taking up time with baby-stuff.

If I ever get a real hassle, or am seriously in need of urgent assistance to understand some editting matter, then I will contact you, and convey that feeling of urgency. In the meantime, as I say, my communications will doubtless seem somewhat juvenile school, so please dont stress. I will learn, but I learn slowly, though I do learn something each time you attend to one of my trivial requests.

Use your best judgement, and you will be telling me things I need to know, such as this useful post. There are so many things i don't know. But you are a guide to me, not a nurse, and I apologise if I am getting too clingy and insecure at this time. I have as you know, some hard times in RL at the moment. you have a smile from Newbyguesses - Talk 22:19, 15 February 2008 (UTC) DIFFNewbyguesses - Talk 22:25, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] A new section- header

Hi, Superm401, if you get a chance to look at general note, commenting on talkpages and Blocking policy - have I got the gist of this?, could you comment as to if I have the gist of these, as I at this time cannot immediately round up the appropriate policy reference links!

Re our previous discussion, the pretty orange bar...post to my page, please reply whenever and wherever convenient. I prefer on thispage, now that the thread is begun, but otherwise is fine, you could even just edit comment the sandboxpage if that works. cheersNewbyguesses - Talk 01:23, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, IAR is part of 5 pillars. But I would caution you not to ignore a rule without good reason, to avoid conflict. All text content on Wikipedia is indeed under the GFDL (except quotes), but you should be very cautious in redacting other users' comments. Contributions made before a block should not be reverted, in my opinion, unless there is something otherwise wrong with them (e.g. unsourced, vandalism, etc.). Superm401 - Talk 02:24, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Good points. In relation to [redaction], I was thinking specifically of redacting only one's own comments, of course, but reverting of vandalism is also a "redaction', yes. And as to Iar, the only part of that that I would rely on is "You do not need to know the rules in order to contribute". "Ignore" is itself an easily misunderstood word, but through participation at talk:Iar, I have come to have a reasonable understanding of a variety of users' concerns, I think. Newbyguesses - Talk 02:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking policy

Is there any reason why I or other user should not be able to access a list such as the *Known sockpuppets of XXXX*? ie. *The known sockpuppets/Wordbomb*? Thus, if I stumble upon such a users talkpage comments, I will know how to deal with - ie ignore, revert, report, question or discount/ other. I think there are such lists connected to the Admin page on sockpuppets AI SS or something, but i cant find my way round there (I only found AN/I recently, in connection with the blocking of User:zenwhat). cheersNewbyguesses - Talk 03:56, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Those lists are indeed public. See Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of WordBomb. Superm401 - Talk 04:06, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. This is my evidence at the mantanmoreland arbcom case FY!Newbyguesses - Talk 13:01, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Do not assume all known socks are listed at Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of WordBomb. That would be nice, but it's probably not true. Superm401 - Talk 21:52, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
That is so, at least it is a known starting point.Newbyguesses - Talk 22:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Vanity piece

see here, I dont know what to, but there are many concerns with this article. Dont think I have time to follow up, but if that were the case, and concerns legitimate and actionable, where would this best be taken, other than away to Afd, which is not likely appropriate. More to follow, if I can work it out, but dont think I could serve any useful purpose in getting involved with what looks like a real can of worms.

The first step would be to, create a talkpage, and discuss problems with the user, in fairness, tho ...Newbyguesses - Talk 17:48, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, sometimes you do need to avoid the worms, or they'll drive you crazy. But in this case I would start by discussing at Talk:Bad Boy Records. Superm401 - Talk 21:54, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

computer problems (other than the usual). This decrepit greybox goes so slow, you know. The other night, it's owner knoked it onto the floor, and then I accidentally kicked it (the computer deserved it). The upshot is, either I or the computer looks like being on it's way out the door. It still goes as slow as ever (1296- The battle of Lepanto).I get to log in only when no-one else is home, the owner, the schooolkids, and the cats get preference. [edit] Library book

FYI - Bad Boy Records - This book is due back at the library in a week.Newbyguesses - Talk 08:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

It's probably not a good idea to paste that many raw quotes into Wikipedia. It has copyright implications. It's harder to show fair use when there are that many quotes, without any significant original content. Superm401 - Talk 08:28, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
See [5] and [6]. My understanding of the Florida , or california courtsystem, is greatfully miniscule. In Australia, where this particular library is located, it says clearly on the wall that 10% percent, of a complete book, is allowable under fair use for study, even if you just photocopy it at the machines provided (which I was too cheepskate to do, all this is hand-input, with minimal Original interpolations, but there are some, and i was scrupulous with the important stuff, like punctuation). It's an established principle, is well in line with best WORLD practice, and so extremely unlikely to be challengfed in Florida, or California, or anywhere the sun shines. That, in good faith, is my understanding.
If your understanding is miniscule, please be conservative. Don't assume things are legal if you're not sure.
For a book of 182 pages, published in 1999, a considerable time for the author to have benefited commercially, TENPERCENT would be, lett's see 18.2 complete pages.
There is no such 10% rule in the United States. It's decided on a case-by-case basis. Again, it's hard to claim fair use if you're not adding original content.
I dont see that what I put up, in my sandbox, which is utterly full of discarded bunkom, and then blanked by me, can possibly be a problem the GFDL certainly applies, and Mike Goodwin, hopefully, can rest easy. That is the name of WP's esteemed counsel, is it not?

Well, yes, I won't be doing much of that sort of thing, anyway. Why bother risking a possible slight of some author's right to make a living, or some rapper millionaire's right to murder at will, and then write their own vanity piece about it? It aint worth getting involved with lawyers, or any sort of "playas"; their ambition, greed and psycopathic narcissism will be rewarded suitably, as they richly deserve, without my deigning to lift a finger. One could just as well take a swim at the sewer, as take an interest in these matters. This image Image:Scylla Louvre CA1341.jpg is in the public domain, and if it is suitable for display at Wikipedia:The grey zone,

  1. does the image file history then need upgrading to show another page (though not an article) is linked to?
  2. How to adjust the size of the image, and does that constitute any copy infringement?

Thanks, when you get a chance. Newbyguesses - Talk 20:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Extended_image_syntax for full image markup details. In this case, the formatting would be:
[[Image:Scylla Louvre CA1341.jpg|thumb|300px|Clever caption]].
300px is the width. No notation on the image page needs to be made by you. A backlink will be made automatically by MediaWiki. Superm401 - Talk 22:18, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Images

I didn't erase your fair use rationale but I have added a tag because I believe we can not use copyrighted images just like that. That is why there is a blatant copyright infringements deletion tag which I used. These images fall into this category and not into IFD. --Avala (talk) 14:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

And where is the source of this image?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Cedomirjovanovic.jpg It uses wrong tag, it's not the work of the official body. --Avala (talk) 14:20, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Oh boy, I feel like you are actually joking. "It seems to be a government photo" - what does that mean?

This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Milutinmrkonjic.jpg - http://www.sps.org.yu/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=12&Itemid=69 - Социјалистичка Партија Србије 1990 - 2007 Сва права задржана is copyrighted and just because it seems to be different to you it doesn't make the reality any different

while this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:MP_Milutin_Mrkonjic.jpg - http://www.parlament.sr.gov.yu/photo/poslanici/2007/157.jpg goes with PD government work tag.

--Avala (talk) 14:39, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I have every right to add the missing source tag when the source is missing. If you think that we should tag photos based on instinct rather than on facts it's your decision but it doesn't go with Wikipedia's standard. I assure these two images were made in a studio indeed but as a part of a presidential campaign and not as a part of a parliamentary or any other photo session. Political parties are not state bodies and their work is copyrighted and these images were downloaded of the party website. So any material from .org.yu can hardly be PD unless it was previously taken from the website of the government or state body which is not the case here. --Avala (talk) 19:07, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE Image CamInc.jpg

This image (taken by a photographer for Pacific Stars and Stripes) is the work of an official U.S. Navy photographer. It appeared in a publication (Images of a Lengthy War by the U.S. Army's Center of Military History) of the U.S. government identified as such. Thus the PD-USGov-Military-Navy label. [edit] Color

Hi, Superm401. Could you help me out here, please? I have no idea what all the code at the top of my talk page does now, but I would like to return the page to a normal, white, background color. If you have time to wade into that messy code, and would care to do that for me, I would be greatful. Or just give me a suggestion, thanks. Newbyguesses - Talk 05:43, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Thankyou. Newbyguesses - Talk 06:18, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. As a CS student, I feel obliged to now tell you this is why you shouldn't copy code without knowing what it does. ;) Superm401 - Talk 06:19, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

OK, I have removed the code I didn't fully understand. ;) Now, I updated the greenbox at the top of talk:newbyg, to fit each point on one line, but how now do I center it, or get the box to be as wide as the talk page, if you have time. Thanks Newbyguesses - Talk 01:35, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

I made the green box take up the whole width. I initially centered the text in the box, but reconsidered that that was probably not what you wanted. Let me know if you want any tweaks. By the way, see [7] for some basic CSS tutorials. Superm401 - Talk 04:34, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, that is how i want it, I think. Perhaps I can re-word the messages to a tidier, more even length, but it does express my views on centralized discussion. I thought i needed to use {{message box}}, but it seems easier without it. Thanks also for the stylesheets; they go on my to-do list somewhere between "stop putting foot in mouth" and "buy new computer". Regards, Newbyguesses - Talk 04:52, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

I guess by "center", I probably meant center the text, but with an even left margin. Is there a "tab" like function in those CSS notes? I could try using indents, but that's ugly. Newbyguesses - Talk 07:26, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
The greenbox is "light blue" now, and I used indents. That will do—Newbyguesses - Talk 08:53, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Redirects

Did I get these two right? [11], [12]. I commented on the merge(s) at talk:Pragmatism, then went ahead and did two redirects, after adding the text to the main article with I think correct edit-summaries. Thanks --Newbyguesses - Talk 03:16, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

It was mostly fine, though not perfect. [13] and [14], the edits in which you copied text to Pragmatism, are fine, though they probably shouldn't have been minor edits. Where you put the text may not be ideal, but it's reasonable and the text can always be moved within the page. You also made clear comments at Talk:Pragmatism#Merge_with_Conceptual_pragmatism_and_French_Pragmatism. It probably wasn't necessary to copy the author's usernames, since they're still available in the page history of the redirects.
Finally, when you create a redirect the line:
  1. REDIRECT Page I'm Redirecting To
should usually be the only text on the page (with some exceptions like {{R from Unicode}} that don't apply here). Thus, I've removed the other text from Conceptual pragmatism and French Pragmatism. None of these issues are anything to worry about. I'm sure you'll get it down pat in the future. Let me know if you have other questions. Superm401 - Talk 00:31, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I wondered about blanking the rest of the page below the redirect, so that is good to know. I know I will still be asking these fairly simple questions for some time, I am glad it doesn't bother you to explain them to me. Sometimes, just writing down my problem is enough for me to work it out. Thank you--Newbyguesses - Talk 23:50, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

I would like to update Image:Chart5c.png. Can't figure out how to do it. I guess it means I would have to upload my 'new work' Chart5d.png. I get this message in Popups - imagepage preview failed :( is the query.php extension installed?). I can see the chart, but not the "source code". Thanks--Newbyguesses - Talk 07:04, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

What do you mean by "source code"? It's a PNG, a raster image format, so there is no vector source code for you to modify. If you want to modify it, you'll have to do so in a program like GIMP or PhotoShop. You can't use Inkscape or a similar program. Once you have an actual modified file, you can go to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&wpDestFile=Chart5c.png (click "Upload a new version of this file" on the image description page). I don't know how you're trying to use popups here. Superm401 - Talk 07:21, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
OK. I have no experience at all with programs like GIMP or PhotoShop, guess I would have to "download" the program first and study it. Thats a bit much for me right now, sorry. I will have to stick with commenting on the talk-page. Thanks--Newbyguesses - Talk 07:41, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Some thoughts on Kosovo articles Kosovo and Republic of Kosovo

Hi there. I took a careful look at each, and it is difficult to justify the existence of these two articles instead of a common article. They substantially talk about the same patch of land. In fact, they both contain overlapping content, particularly graphics, politics and history. I think to a neutral observer, esp. one who never heard of Kosovo, this bifurcation will be bewildering. I don't think we do this for any other "geopolitical region" and "country", where the two are in fact the same. IMHO the fact of Kosovo having a disputed nature politically should be clearly put to words inside one article about Kosovo. Please look at the way this was done on other Wikipedias, in particular the Polish one, where the article was written by neutral political and geographical experts. Best wishes, --Mareklug talk 05:29, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Kosovo

Hello Superm401. I noticed that you moved Kosovo to Republic of Kosovo earlier today. I've been monitoring this article for a long time and there is absolutely not consensus for this. Such controversial move could only be legitimate with clear approval from the community following a properly listed requested move. Thank you. Regards, Húsönd 14:26, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Right, one doesn't need to go through WP:RM but usually that's when a move isn't going to be controversial. As you can see at Talk:Kosovo, there is absolutely no consensus for the move. Furthermore, the article was move protected, one more reason do treat a move with extreme caution and follow all necessary procedures to ensure that it would be approved by the community. This was not a case for WP:BOLD, in my opinion. Best regards, Húsönd 00:33, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, after reading the above comment, I think that it sounded a bit as if I'm ranting. Wasn't the case. In order to prove that I was just expressing my opinion in a good mood, I'll add a smiley. :-) Regards, Húsönd 00:38, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Source information for an Image

The image I uploaded, Image:Mahdi Army fighters take up positions during the street fighting in Basra.jpg, those have it's source information. I stated that it came from an insurgent video clip. I also just added that it was taken from www.youtube.com.User talk:Top Gun

How the hell should I know who created it, it's an insurgent video. I don't belive they leave their names for copyright purposes or they will be arrested by the Coalition or killed by rival insurgent groups. Here is the link the image was taken from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvBP4L9d7vU. OK listen the image is realy needed to give a good representation of the street fighting in Basra in 2008, the image should be left because there was a media blockade of Basra during the fighting and the only video and images of the events were taken by Iraqi soldiers, insurgents or a few freelance journalists. This one came from insurgents. For a NPOV of the article it is realy needed, there have already three images of the Iraqi army been put in the article and only this one of the insurgents. And because the Mahdi Army was the one that was the bigger victor in the battle there should be at least this one image of their fighters in the article, not just Iraqi security forces. User talk:Top Gun

OK sorry about the "how the hell" part, but listen. It's an insurgent propaganda video. So it was distributed on the net for propaganda purposes. So anybody can use it. Like I said before, I have posted the link to the video it was taken from. And again the gay that made the video is an unknown insurgent fighter. Like I said before he wouldn't have stated his name because he would be arrested by the Coalition or killed by rival insurgent groups. Actually he might already be dead.User talk:Top Gun

That's just it, there are no insurgent legal problems, this is explicetly a free use image from a free use video. The militants don't care about does things they distribute the videos on the net for anybody to use them.User talk:Top Gun —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.116.170.203 (talk) 21:35, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I understand the reasons for removing the photograph in the David Blackwell article. That photo was present before I started looking at the article, and I have no idea about its copyvio status. However, instead of simply removing the photo and cleaning up bad tags, you reverted to before the photo was added. This action caused most of the text of the article to be removed. I'm going to do my best to restore the lost text. [edit] Adolf Hitler

I agree with the need to seek references, but it makes the article unreadable to festoon {{cn}} everywhere. It is better to tag the whole section if references are that poor. In any event, the matters may well be properly referenced in the hatnoted articles. That would satisfy WP:V and WP:RS. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 22:39, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Compare link.js

Hello. Please do not use MediaWiki namespace for personal userscripts. There are several reasons, one of them is that your edits clutter Recent Changes in this namespace. —AlexSm 21:33, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

The following paragraph was moved from User talk:Alex Smotrov so the discussion is not fragmented
I am not the one who placed that script in MediaWiki namespace. That was done by FT2. Superm401 - Talk 16:33, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
So, you want to me to ask FT2 to move to your userspace? or to his userspace? Since this seems to be your script, I hoped you could fix this yourself. —AlexSm 16:50, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

You may want to, somehow, alert users of this script to the changed location. The reason for this is that anybody using "importscript" to the old location now has a non-functional script. All it takes is the importscript to point to the location here at your userpage, but I'm guessing a fair number of users may not know this. I have updated the Wikiproject link. I will see if there is a way of searching for users of the old location, but I'm guessing there probably won't be. -Lilac Soul (talk contribs count) I'm watching this page so just reply to me right here! 13:08, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Note that I did mention this on my talk page after Superm401 decided (yet again) to move the discussion back to my talk page, but I guess he didn't notice... —AlexSm 13:29, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
I've added the import. Of course, this now means that the MediaWiki page (which is still in effect a cross-namespace redirect) can't be deleted, so there's still a MediaWiki page dedicated to my "personal userscript". I'm not sure what the point of all this was; I don't think small edits every month (at most) were clogging MediaWiki recent changes. Superm401 - Talk 14:35, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:George Johnson science writer.jpg listed for deletion

Thanks for letting me know the image was listed for deletion. I have an OTRS ticket number from when I got permission to use images from BloggingHeads.tv on here, but I do not know how to put it into the image page. I was told before to use the templates {{GFDL}} and {{PermissionOTRS-ID|2007111910004338}}, but the latter never displays correctly when I use it. (I think it is for Wikimedia or something) If you could help me, I would really like to get the images tagged correctly, but reading through the OTRS guidelines to try and figure out how to tag the image yielded no results. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. Cardsplayer4life (talk) 05:56, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Gary Kelly

The disambiguation of Gary Kelly seems premature as there is only one on wikipedia and only the one I am aware of. Were there to be three Gary Kelly's out there I would back the page 100%. Alexsanderson83 20:11, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I still can't see the third. Alexsanderson83 21:09, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
If a third cannot be found I will look into moving back to the status quo. Alexsanderson83 22:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
If there is another Gary Kelly out there I will happily leave it as it is, otherwise I will be returning it to its previous format. Alexsanderson83 05:51, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
