Superior High School (SHS) is one of the high schools located in Superior, Wisconsin (The other one being Maranatha Academy, a private school). It opened in 1965 replacing East and Central High Schools. Those schools then became middle schools (both were closed and torn down in 2003. An office building is being built on Central's site and a housing project was built on East's site). It is a part of the School District of Superior, and with a student body of around 1,600, the high school serves grades 9-12 with a staff of around 150. The mission of SHS is to “Provide all children with the relevant tools to develop a foundation for living, learning and working successfully.”

All students must accumulate 22 credits in grades 9-12 in addition to one-half credit of Health in grades 7-12. All students must register for a minimum of 5.5 credits each year, and all students may take up to 7 credits per year. One credit of English is required each year in grades 9-12; one credit of Social Studies/History is required each year, two credits of Math are required including one credit of algebra, two years of Science (9th grade Science and 10th grade Biology); and one-half credit of Physical Education each year in grades 9, 10, and 11. Also one-half credit of Keystone is required for the graduating class of 2006 and beyond. All seniors must complete a Senior Project in order to graduate. A student may take up to seven credits per school year (there are seven class hours). A student must take a minimum of five and one-half credits. It's recommended that a student, in most cases, take a minimum of six credits.

The school also offers many different clubs and organizations that students partake. Among those are:

Co-Curricular Activities
Distributive Education Club of America (DECA)
Drama One Act Play
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)
Forensics
Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN)
Quiz Bowl
Mock Trial
Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA)

SHS also offers advanced placement classes where students can take tests for college credits. One can do this in history, math, science, language, and English.

Many scholarship are also available for students planning to attend either a two-year or four-year higher learning institution. The major scholarship is generally referred to as the "Nelson Scholarship" which grants scholarships worth up to $6,000. The Superior Scholarship Foundation also maintains a database of local scholarships.

Recently, the graduation rate has begun to decline. Superior has one of the lowest graduation rates in the state of Wisconsin. And recently, the school has attempted to change this. They have begun programs that keep kids on track and have counselors make sure that most seniors are on track to graduate. [2]

[edit] Athletics

Because of its proximity to Minnesota, Superior High School athletics competes primarily with schools located in Minnesota. The next closest Wisconsin school SHS competes with is either Eau Claire or Hudson.
