From 1874 onwards, Adelaide, South Australia had the presence of tertiary education institutions, starting with the University of Adelaide (1874), Flinders University (1966), and then University of South Australia (1990). A dual focus of education and research was taken by the first and second universities (founded as outright university institutions), but the third university was founded by a new South Australian Government initiative born out of a more practical focus on education, life skills and regular employment. This led to the aggregation of former Art Schools and Technical Colleges, amalgamated during the university-centric policy of the South Australian Government in 1980s/1990s, in relation to the University of South Australia Act 1990[1]
This network has sister institutions interstate e.g. Southern Catholic University, Victoria University etc. which have foundations in similar late 20th century educational policy - New Generation Universities (NGU) [2]
