Super Fresh is a chain of supermarkets owned by A&P. The Super Fresh name was introduced in 1982, but the parent company had already existed for over 120 years (it was founded as early as 1859). Many of the Philadelphia area locations opened as A&P-branded stores, but were rebranded to Super Fresh in the late 1980s and early '90s. However, these were usually older, smaller, outdated stores, and several have since closed. They are located primarily in the Baltimore, Maryland, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, areas (including parts of Delaware and New Jersey) and in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Several Super Fresh-branded A&P stores operated in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area until 2003, when they were rebranded to the company's Sav-A-Center banner. One location in Philadelphia also has been rebranded to A&P's Food Basics banner. The brand also existed in Canada, although all stores have since been rebranded as Food Basics.
In late 2006, A&P bought six Clemens Family Markets and converted them to Super Fresh stores. These are in Montgomery and Bucks counties in Pennsylvania. A&P was criticized at the time for laying off about 2500 Clemens Family Market employees.
The Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area is the only area in the world in which Safeway and A&P (operating under the Super Fresh name) compete directly.
