SuperTux is a free, open source classic style 2D jump and run game, inspired by the Nintendo Super Mario series. It was originally created by Bill Kendrick and is currently maintained by the SuperTux Development Team.

Instead of Mario, the hero in this game is Tux, the mascot of the Linux kernel, albeit the game's only reference to Linux. Many of the in-game graphics were created by Ingo Ruhnke, creator of Pingus.

Version 0.0.4 of SuperTux was released in April 2003. Due to interest caused by happypenguin.org's Game of the Month award in March 2004, SuperTux reached its first milestone, an entire playable world with gameplay similar to Super Mario Bros., on May 2nd, 2004.

Version 0.1.3 was first released on July 9, 2005. It includes one main world (26 levels), and two bonus islands (22 and 28 levels, respectively), which includes both official and fan-made levels. Currently, the source code, and Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X binary packages are available for this release right now. Binaries for other operating systems should follow up soon.

Version 0.3.0 (AKA Milestone 1.9) was released December 17, 2006. It's a development version leading into SuperTux 0.4, aka Milestone 2. Some of its new features include:

  • Rewritten collision system
  • Forest tileset
  • 800 × 600 resolution
  • Translation and UTF-8 support
  • Squirrel scripting engine (used e.g. to implement Boss functionality)
  • Ability for players to create their own levels.

SuperTux runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. Ports to other platforms (FreeBSD, BeOS, etc.) are also available. The game has also been ported to GP2X and Pocket PC as well as the Playstation Portable.[1]

SuperTux is released under the GNU General Public License with most data files being dual-licensed under the Creative Commons "CC-by-sa" license.
