Mugen no Frontier: Super Robot Wars OG Saga (Endless Frontier: Super Robot Wars OG Saga) is a video game of Banpresto, co-developed with Monolith Soft, the studio behind the Xenosaga series. It is a spin-off of the Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation series. Released on May 29, 2008 on the Nintendo DS, the title departs from the traditional tactical role-playing game elements for which the Super Robot Wars franchise is known and opts for turn-based role-playing gameplay instead.
A drama CD, where events in the extra scenarios of Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 in Super Robot Wars Original Generations are revealed, was given as a bonus gift to consumers who pre-ordered the game.[1] On February 26, 2008, a manga series based on Mugen no Frontier began serialization in the fourth volume of the KeroKero Ace magazine.[2]

[edit] Features
The game features multiple worlds with combat taking place on foot. Aside from the playable characters in the game, mecha, many of them similar to the ones from the Original Generation games, are also playable, if not controllable by the player's actions and issuing of commands. The battle system is similar to that of Namco X Capcom (another game developed by Monolith Soft), in that attack commands during battle are issued via timed button presses, rather than through the menu system typical of the role-playing genre. The player can chain these attacks together to execute long attack combinations while issuing a new set of commands, such as support from characters on standby. The mecha featured in this game are much smaller than the ones in the Super Robot Wars series, appearing to be around human-size.
The game also features several characters from other series, mainly Namco x Capcom and Xenosaga. Mugen no Frontier's theme song "Butterfly" is performed by Japanese girl-group Perfume and is featured on their latest album, GAME.
[edit] Characters & Mecha
[edit] Protagonists
[edit] Original
Four new original characters, many of them bearing references to specifically created characters by Banpresto take the leading roles. Curiously, these four contain references to the ATX Team.
- Haken Browning
- Voice Actor: Nobuyuki Hiyama
- The male protagonist of Mugen no Frontier, 23-year old Haken Browning is a cool, nihilistic bounty hunter from Lost Herencia who wields the Night Foul customized rifle that has a built-in partisan-type weapon and a long-barreled handgun called the Longturm Special. He also manages the ship Zeit Krokodil (Time Crocodile in German), serving as its captain. Haken shares the same surname as Excellen Browning, and his appearance of black-color clothing and silver hair is similar to Sanger Zonvolt. His moveset also enlists the use of several explosive cards in a technique called Trump Card, a reference to Kyosuke Nanbu.
-
- As the game progresses, Haken is revealed to be the first unit in the W-Numbers.
- Kaguya Nanbu
- Voice Actress: Yukana
- One of three female protagonists, 18-year old Kaguya Nanbu, from the nation of Kagura Amahara, is of royal descent and is on a pilgrimage of unknown origins. She is a master of the Jinraku Tengen style of kenjutsu and wields the Goushiki Zankantō, a single-edged longsword. Kaguya shares the same surname as Kyosuke Nanbu. She also styles herself as The Sword That Cleaves Evil, much like Sanger Zonvolt.
- Aschen Brödel
- Voice Actress: Kaori Shimizu
- The second of three female protagonists, Aschen Brödel is the android subordinate to Haken, possessing a certain speech problem and an occasional personality split between a stoic, reserved android and a cheerful, upbeat woman. She has been alongside Haken for 23 years, hinting she might have been by his side since birth. With the appearance of a 20-year old, her primary style of combat consists of striking attacks, but she is also able to utilize a variety of armaments located inside her mechanical body.
-
- Revealed in the drama CD, Aschen is codenamed W07, the predecessor to W17.
- Suzuka-Hime (Princess Suzuka)
- Voice Actress: Mamiko Noto
- The last of the three female protagonists, Suzuka is a princess of a tribe in Kagura Amahara, known for their summoning rituals. Taking the appearance of a 14 to 15-year old, she is travelling as an assistant to Kaguya and dual wields a pair of fans. During combat, she is capable of calling upon the help of the Jyaki-GUN-Oh, one of the mecha featured in the game. She harbors an interest in androids and mechanical beings.
-
- Due to the classification of the Jyaki-GUN-Oh as a Chōkijin[3], it is often thought she may be partly based on Kusuha Mizuha and Brooklyn Luckfield.
[edit] Crossover
These characters have appeared in other media developed by Monolith Soft.
- Reiji Arisu
- Voice Actor: Kazuhiko Inoue
- The male protagonist of Namco X Capcom, Reiji serves as a time cop alongside his partner, Xiaomu for the Shinra organization. His character is based on Kyosuke Nanbu, and he fights with multiple elemental katanas and handguns. He also has a bad habit of smoking.
- Xiaomu
- Voice Actress: Omi Minami
- The female protagonist of Namco X Capcom, Xiaomu is a cheerful, flirtatious fox demon that assists Reiji in his enforcement duties. She is based on Excellen Browning and fights with handguns, an ice-based, elemental cane sword called the Shakujo, and assorted magic.
- KOS-MOS
- Voice Actress: Mariko Suzuki
- KOS-MOS is one of the major characters in the Xenosaga series. Her design for this game seems to be based on her Version 4 character design from Xenosaga Episode III: Also sprach Zarathustra.
-
- Scans show Mugen no Frontier takes place after the events of Namco X Capcom. Reiji appears slightly older and during the meeting with KOS-MOS, Xiaomu remarks it's been awhile since they last met and is surprised at seeing KOS-MOS's Version 4 design, also implying the story takes place during the time frame of Xenosaga Episode III.[4]

- Weiss Ritter Abend
- Meaning White Knight Evening in German, the Weiss Ritter Abend's appearance and design gives it a parallel to Excellen Browning's Weiss Ritter machine. Like the Nacht, the Abend starts out orange, but is able to enter a "rage mode" and turn blue, matching the color scheme of the default Weiss Ritter.
- Jyaki-GUN-Oh
- Also known as the Devil Gun King, it is classified as a Chōkijin and holds multiple solid-based weaponry within its body.
