Your VandalProof Application

Dear Sunny910910,

Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that at this time you do not meet the minimum requirement of 250 edits to mainspace articles (see under main here). Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again soon. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof. Daniel 06:55, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikimarkup

{{tl:helpme}}

Is there a page that explaines how advanced wikimarkup works, markup such as

--Sunny910910 {talk|Contributions} 13:16, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

I fact it is HTML markup, not wiki markup. You will find some examples of wiki markup at Help:Editing and Help:Wikitext examples. For your part, the first removes the icon from the enclosed external link such as [1], and the second is probably a part of a table with a font and a background color. I hope this helps! -- lucasbfr talk 17:09, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

User :72.11.49.208

You're welcome. If you aren't using it already, might I suggest Twinkle? It's a script that you can use to help fight vandalism, patrol new pages etc. It is extrememly useful. The warning function makes it very easy to warn users after reverting, and reporting users who have vandalized after their final warning to AIV. Just a thought. i said 02:35, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

RE:Closing script

Just add the following line of code to your monobook.js and purge the cache:

importScript('Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/MotD closure script');

Remember to do it in a section-by-section manner. Regards, —[[Animum | talk]] 00:53, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

I often warn vandals/nonconstructive editors. However, the last couple of days have seen a major outbreak of sockpuppetry on some of the articles with which I'm involved, and that took precedence over some minor vandalism on Eragon-related articles. --Mark H Wilkinson (t, c) 14:00, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

My Eragon Redirects

Thanks for redirecting them to the specific section. It slipped my mind to do that. Good work. i said 01:24, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Re: (User talk:ais523) User:Ais523/catwatch.js

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the way you installed the script, and it's working fine for me at the moment. I have heard of a problem similar to what you're describing, but don't know what causes it or under what circumstances it happens. What version of what browser are you using? --ais523 11:00, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

I've checked your WatchedCategories.js script too. There seems to be nothing wrong with its format (if you want to watch the helpme category, though, I think you have to use its full name "Wikipedians looking for help" rather than an abbreviation, but that shouldn't be causing the error you see). I've tested your monobook.js and WatchedCategories.js on Firefox 2 and IE6 and I'm not seeing problems; with luck, I may be able to find a computer running IE7 soon so I can check on that as well. I have, however, added some debug information to the script; could you bypass your cache, try again, and let me know what the debug information in the 'do you want to create a category watchlist' box is? --ais523 08:29, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
The debug data you gave me is exactly what would appear if your watchlist didn't exist. I think that the only explanation is that the non-existent page is stuck in your browser cache, and that bypassing your cache doesn't get rid of it because IE7 doesn't know it's being referenced. I've been messing around with IE7 trying to find a way to bypass it out of the cache, and I haven't succeeded yet. (Trying 'Tools' then 'Delete Browsing History...' then deleting all your temporary internet files may solve it; that's the only thing I can think of at the moment, but I don't know if it will work. IE7 (which I've been testing with respect to the script) is really being obstructive in this case; I could come up with a way to bypass the specific URL in question without much of a problem in Firefox.) If that doesn't work, or you don't want to try it, I'll try to think of something else. --ais523 08:22, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Anti-vand tools/scripts

I'm currently using User:VoA/monobook.js for warning vandals, however it seems to be "out of date" and lacking. So I'm looking for a more updated tool/script that I can use on IE7 (Twinkle would be an answer if it would work on IE). Any help would be appreciated.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 02:13, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

On my first ever Wikipedia page

Thank-you for getting back to me.

I have written my page/entry whatever you want to call it and it is not yet publishing. But in addition to this I believe I have made a couple of mistakes. I believe when you see the subject of the page I am trying to create you no doubt will agree to the seriousness of my task.

I am trying to post the subject Qais Khazali. It is in my 'contributions' folder. I have written it to the best of my (present) ability and yet it has yet to be posted. I am wondering why that is.

Furthermore, I am having difficulty with the 'Pipe" mechanism. Whenever I have tried it - by as instructed pressing the Shift+ the Backward slash (or is it a forward slash) I just get the 'slash' and not the straight up and down line that is deemed necessary to make the Pipe mechanism work.

I would be grateful for any help you can give me.

Thank-you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ghnexus (talkcontribs) 00:41, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

On my first article

Okay Sunny910910 (and thank-you again so much for your help) - here's the thing. I did what you said. I got two windows going. I called up the Wikipedia home page on one, and my user page on the other. Found my article. And then I did what you said. I dragged the address from my user page over to the search engine of the home page and indeed that page did in fac then turn to my article. But then I quit everything. Logged back on the Wikipedia home page and entered the subject of my post, hoping to see it, but again it came up to a no 'results to be found'. But here's the thing - it came up to a different page than before. Before when I would do this I would get the 'create this page' page. I no longer get this page. Instead I just get a page with 'Search' as its header and below it a search engine. I enter the name that is the name of my article and still nothing. Again, I reiterate Sunny910910 - this is an important article. We need to make this happen, and I appreciate so much your help.

You seem proficent with AWB. Would you be willing to go through and change Inheritance trilogy to Inhertance cycle? I've never used AWB, and I think it would be best to use that for this. Just a thought. Thanks. i (talk) 01:49, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Ah. It's recent, so maybe you haven't heard. There are going to be four books, as he cannot fit the entire series into three. It is not called the Inheritance cycle. Do you think you could AWB to change uses of "trilogy" to "cycle"? See here. i (talk) 01:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. You don't have to or anything, as it will get done anyway, but you have AWB, and I've spoken to you in the past and worked with you about Eragon, so you seemed like a good candadate for poking. i (talk) 02:42, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Outcast Image.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Outcast Image.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 12:58, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Can anybody explain to me what to put on each section of the above template?--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 00:06, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Article: Where you intend to use the image. This is required.
Description: A short description of what the image is.
Source: Where you got the image. This is required.
Portion: In order to qualify, some fair use images are required to only show a portion of the complete subject, mainly when dealing with artwork. Here you specify exactly what is covered.
Low-resolution: Fair-use images should be low-res to qualify. If it is not, mark "no" and find a replacement as soon as possible.
Purpose: Why you need to use the image. This is required and should meet WP:NFC standards.
Replaceability: This should be no. If it is yes, the image probably does not qualify for fair use and will be deleted.
Other Information: As it says, anything that needs to be stated that isn't already.
I hope this helps! If you need more information, the fair use policy should help some and the template documentation provides a bit more info. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 00:13, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

TfD closing

Don't worry, you're not the first person to ask :) . TfD is much different in AfD that "no consensus" defaults to "keep" because as an encyclopedia, it's our job to have articles, so we air on the side of caution. There are a few AfD trump cards like WP:BLP and copyright violations. In TfD, there are many more such "trump cards" because template exist to serve the encyclopedia, and not the other way around as with articles. Basically, it's redundant to navboxes, which are well-established, and it breaks accessibility in some cases, so we're better off without it. RyanGerbil10(Говорить!) 03:56, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

My personal page removal warrning

Hi Sunny 910910,

For some reason my page, that contains only few factual lines, was marked for removal.

I wish to understand why and fix it.

Please advise.

This was not vandalism, and it was a talk page. You should really learn the definition of the terms you sling around. Study up, Sunny. 155.188.247.5 (talk) 00:34, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
You still haven't said how my comment was in any way, shape, or form vandalism. Read up on Wikipedia policy. Change to Eragon article reversed... why?

Hello,

I've never bothered to edit wikipedia articles before, but while reading the article on the novel Eragon I discovered an error that I thought I might as well correct since I had the time... I am now honestly suprized by the fact you reversed my correction, so I thought I better explain why I made the change.

The article states that "both the first cover (see left) and the map were drawn by Paolini". This is misleading, since according to Christopher Paolini's comments in the Acknowlegments section of Eragon, it was his sister, Angela Paolini, who spent "long hours Photoshopping Saphira's eye on the cover". Interestingly, Angela Paolini is appropriately credited in the wikipedia article about Christopher Paolini, but was not credited properly in the article about the actual book the cover appeared on.

Whether Angela Paolini was the person who made the maps in the self-published version I don't know, but she is the person Christopher Paolini credits with making the cover image for that version.

Regards,

~Angela Kercher

PS: I have no relation to Angela Paolini, and I'm not even one of Christopher Paolini's biggest fans. I just happened to notice the error since I recently finished reading the book. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.53.165.210 (talk) 02:50, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Hmm...I've just checked the book and I think you may be right. However where it says "her long hours photoshoping Saphira's eye on the cover", it doesn't say if its the original version of the cover. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll look into it, but for now, I'll leave it without the section you've added until I can find something to back it up. Thanks again for pointing that out.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 03:20, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
You may also want to consider creating an account, it makes it easier to find the right person as IP addresses change. And it also provides many other benefits.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 03:24, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

The Novels WikiProject Newsletter
Issue XIX - December 2007
Project news
  • A fairly quiet month in November. However we had a fairly successful COTM with the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland article with 85 modifications made. The success of which I will leave to your assessment.
Member news
  • The project has currently 290 members, 8 joined & 0 leavers since the start of November 2007
Task force news
  • The Fantasy task force has got off to a really good start with now 13 members. Do cooperate one with another and make it really work for us.
  • If any group of editors sees a need for a new "task force" then let us know. Also we can link a WikiProject in as a task force (as Australian task force), this has the benefit of reducing the level of effort dissipation and also advertising interest areas in more than one location.

Your VandalProof Application

Thank you for your interest in VandalProof, Sunny910910. As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again soon. Thank again for your interest in VandalProof. βcommand 14:45, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

You could move the comments to the bottom of the page. NF24(radio me!) 01:09, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
I guess that would work, but I was looking for a way using a different code. I like to keep things in a certain order.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 01:14, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for trying to help.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 01:14, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi Sunny, the issue is that you have so many userboxes, that they are hiding the items behind them. One way to solve this, if you don't wish to reorder it, would be to format your userpage into tables, and cells, and place the userboxes into one cell, and the main content into another, to avoid interference. See the main page for a rather fancy example of how that looks, but basically it is due to the structure of the page, and without a coding change, I'm afraid that it will not work the way you are thinking. Hope that helps you explain why the display errors are happening! ArielGold 01:55, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Mark Stevens (Venture Capitalist) speedy deletion

Amilator (talk) 03:22, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, you recently deleted a biography I created for Mark Stevens. Under the biography criteria, it states "The person has made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in his or her specific field". Mr Stevens donated $22M to USC to help start a new division to the school (http://stevens.usc.edu/). Please reconsider. Thanks.

The Novels WikiProject Newsletter
Issue XX - January 2008
Project news
  • Welcome to a new calendar year (for most of us!)
  • During 2007 we have seen membership grow from just below 200 to just below 300. Also our tagged article count now runs at about 16,000 considerably up on this time last year. It highlights the message given from last year that there is much work to do improving and caring for this corner of our "wikiworld". Sadly our Auto-list editor moved on and we sorely need an able replacement. On a more positive note we have seen the establishment of task forces, style guidelines and peer review. Our latest outreach initiative is the Novels Job Centre.
Member news
  • The project has currently 299 members, 9 joined & 0 leavers since the start of November 2007
  • n.b. this graph copy has been included as a "one off" example just for this newsletter to let you see the addition to our membership page.

Task force news
  • The Australian task force (i.e. WikiProject Australian literature) is always welcoming new participants interested in Australian fiction.

References and reflist

OK, my edit summary was probably a bit much. Someone just ran though about 50 articles I have watchlisted making automatic edits which, among other things, changed <references /> to {{reflist}} in most of them. References/ uses the same font as the rest of the text, reflist makes the font smaller (and has an option for two columns). Some editors object to small font because it's a carryover from paper text, and wikipedia is not paper. Some others simply find it harder to read a smaller font. While small font seems tolerated when there are tons of notes (such as featured articles), according to {{Reflist}} "there is no consensus that small font size should always be used for all references". I'm told that the next release version of AWB will not change references/ to reflist by default. Gimmetrow 03:36, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
