[edit] Reason for trip
Under her "Reason for trip," it is stated, "Was told a vacation in which she would leave Jin, but loved him too much to do so; was actually accompanying Jin on a mission for her father."
To start, the first clause seems unclear. "Was told..." leaves ambiguity and seems very out of place. Also, as a devout fan of the series, I don't recall the information in the second clause about her knowingly accompanying Jin ever being stated anywhere in canon. I know it is a common fan speculation, but can anyone point to an official reference? --User:Lion Wilson 01:46, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Name
Is there an official source that Sun's full name is indeed Sun-Soo Kwon? I have yet to see evidence from the show confirming this. As far as I know, all we have so far, as of the sixth episode of the second season, is that her name is Sun Paik. I am sceptical about her name being Sun-Soo Kwon for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it would be really curious if she has indeed adopted her husband's surname, something unheard of in Korea. We know that she comes from the Paik family. Secondly, it seems odd for Jin-Soo and Sun-Soo to be a couple, just as it would seem a bit contrived if a couple were given rhyming names like Nancy and Clancy. I can only guess that Sun-Soo Kwon was extrapolated from Sun based on Jin's canonical full name being Jin-Soo Kwon. I just hope this bit of carelessness is not canonical, although I wouldn't be surprised if it were, given Lost's awful record on cultural accuracy. --219.254.220.163 07:15, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
- This IMDB link [1] for "Lost: The Journey" lists the name as Sun-Hwa Kwon. As a Korean, I can tell you that Sun-Hwa is a much more believable name than Sun-Soo. Since the name "Sun-Soo Kwon" increasingly appears to be someone's mistake, I'll correct the entries as soon as I figure out what to do with the surname. As I said, Korean women do not adopt their husbands' surnames. In practice, however, they are automatically assigned their husbands' surnames all the time by people from cultures unfamiliar with Korean custom, and a few (especially Korean Americans) just decide to go along with it. Those who do end up with different surnames in Korean and English, as original surnames will be retained in the Korean name no matter what, but when writing names in English the woman will either substitute the husband's surname or in rare cases use both surnames (e.g. Sun-Hwa Paik Kwon). So I guess "Sun-Hwa Kwon" could be the name Sun adopts for English document purposes, although her Korean legal name remains "Sun-Hwa Paik (백선화)" unless Sun has for some reason changed her surname legally. Any ideas on how to handle this? --219.254.220.163 05:47, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
- I will certainly look into it, and see if we can get some type of verification. I don't doubt what you're telling us, but, since I (and suspect most of the other main editors) do not speak Korean, I think some type of double-checking, especially with production records, would be appropriate before we make a choice (and/or move). Thank you for your information. Baryonyx 09:31, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
- I would tend to agree with Baryonyx. It's certainly an interesting can of worms, though.Bjones 13:51, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
- Writer & Supervising Producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach replied to a question I posed at the Fuselage as follows:
-
- "my understanding is that most korean names are hyphenated (like jin-soo) but we made a deliberate choice not to give sun a middle name, whereas jin does have one. sun's maiden surname is paik, her married surname is kwon - which is jin's last name."
- This would technically mean that the character's confirmed name is Sun Kwon, that's it. And, IMHO, a statement from Javi supersedes any references made by IMDB, whose sources are frequently not PTB for a show, and thus nowhere near as credible as a producer of Lost himself. So, if we were to be doing any name changing on the page, it would be to Sun Kwon, but definitely not Sun-Hwa Paik. Baryonyx 08:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
- It makes sense that the given name is just "Sun"; other Korean characters call her that, albeit in an English pronunciation. Javier is mistaken that middle names exist in Korean names, though. Jin-soo is a two-syllable "first name", and Sun would be a single-syllable "first name". This comes from the unfortunate habit many Koreans have of separating the syllables of their names with hyphens or writing them as separate words, forever confusing non-Koreans. The vast majority of Koreans have two-syllable given names, although many have one-syllable given names and a few have given names of more than three syllables. I assume there would be no objections then to moving this page to "Sun Kwon" instead of the phantom "Sun-Soo Kwon". --Iceager 03:29, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
I'm proposing that this page and Jin's be formally renamed to "Kwon Sun-Hwa" and "Kwon Jin-Soo," in keeping with standard Korean name order. See Jin's talk page for discussion. — Dodiad 23:56, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm not an expert here or anything but the Hangul version of the name Kwon seems wrong to me. Anybody know for certain, the name looks like Beak as far as I can make out. Like I said though; I'm only learning to read Hangul so I could be wrong.
"She has the same name as the sun." Hilarious edit.
[edit] Reason for move
Hi, why was this article moved? I thought one of the producers clarified her name is Sun. (See section above for link, please.) --Kjoonlee 04:34, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'd say if there's an episode where someone calls Sun Sun-Hwa, then that would trump one of the producers, but otherwise, I think this article should be moved back. --Kjoonlee 04:50, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
