Sunset is a town in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,352 at the 2000 census.

Sunset is located at 30°24′30″N, 92°3′58″W (30.408456, -92.066132)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²), of which, 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.96%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,352 people, 885 households, and 638 families residing in the town. The population density was 756.1 people per square mile (292.0/km²). There were 974 housing units at an average density of 313.1/sq mi (120.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 46.47% White, 52.38% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.47% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.06% of the population.

There were 892 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 24.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the town the population was spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $22,384, and the median income for a family was $29,559. Males had a median income of $29,405 versus $16,838 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,642. About 28.6% of families and 33.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.5% of those under age 18 and 24.1% of those age 65 or over.

As many towns started in Southern Louisiana, Sunset began as a railroad town and was incorporated in 1906. It served for a brief time as the "Sweet Potato Capital of the Nation" at the turn of the 20th century. Oddly enough, The Bank of Sunset was one of the very few that did not close throughout the Great Depression of 1929.
