[edit] On Campus Activities
SMHS has notable business-oriented clubs, such as FBLA and DECA, various foreign language clubs and others. SMHS also offers Advanced Placement (AP) classes as well as AIMs classes, which are endemic to the PUSD. The student newspaper is the "award-winning" Mustang Express, which is part of the High School National Ad Network. The school's Yearbook has taken first place in the state for the AIPA General Excellence Award.
A student store is run on campus by student volunteers and those enrolled in Marketing courses. It offers a selection of food as well as basic supplies and various school-themed merchandise.
[edit] Academic Achievements
As of October 2005, Sunrise Mountain was labeled an excelling high school, which means, among other things, that Sunrise mountain is one of the top 9.4% of Arizona public schools.
[edit] Close Campus and its Changes
Starting with the 2006-2007 school year, the school's new administration has implemented a number of new policies, such as a new open/closed campus policy. These new policies caused a number of changes around the campus, such as the addition of new security guards and a more stringent absence policy. The four-foot gates that used to surround the school have been upped to 12-foot gates, making the front entrance the only way to get in or out of the school. Juniors and seniors who wish to go off campus for lunch now need to meet certain academic criteria as well as watch a video and have their parents or guardians sign a slip accepting full liability (parents and guardians must also watch the video). Eligible students are granted brightly colored IDs so that the security guards who monitor the entrances/exits of the parking lots can easily tell which students have permission to leave campus.
[edit] "Pride of the Sunrise" Marching Band
In 2007, the Sunrise Mountain 'Pride of the Sunrise" Marching Band was awarded the rating of a superior at the ABODA State Marching Festival. Shortly after the marching band was awarded the rating of superior at the University of Arizona Band Day, the first school in the Peoria Unified School District to receive this rating.
