Adams was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in rural East Texas. "I grew up in Pickton, Texas, population 90, with no phone, one TV channel and no one to play with for miles." [1] Adams describes herself as a "curious and wild" tomboy, recalling that in the 6th grade, she tattooed "horny" on her knuckles using a sewing needle and ink from a pen. Adams first engaged in sexual intercourse at the age of 14.[2] In high school, Adams was athletic, playing basketball and football. She is reported to be the only girl to ever play on both the Junior and Senior varsity football teams for the Como-Pickton school district. At age 16, Adams enrolled at a nearby community college to complete her last two years of high school.[3][4]

At the age of 18, Adams was employed at a Sonic Drive-In. Her aunt Sunset Thomas came to visit, arriving in a tractor and trailer. Thomas, a pornographic actress, convinced Adams that the adult film industry could provide her a path to wealth and fame, and suggested a stage name complementary to her own.[5] Adams left Texas for Los Angeles, and began her career as a pornographic actress. On January 8, 2001, she appeared with Ed Powers in More Dirty Debutantes 186. She later referred to the experience of making that film as "nothing I want to remember".[6]
Adams became popular with fans, and signed a two year contract with Vivid Entertainment in August, 2002, officially becoming a "Vivid Girl." Adams had refused an earlier offer from Vivid to become one of their exclusive actresses, choosing to remain a free agent. Vivid's founder and president Steve Hirsch pursued her, eventually agreeing to meet with her at a gas station while she was en-route to close escrow on her first house. Hirsch spoke with Adams, who agreed to join Vivid on the spot; they signed the contract on the hood of Adams' car. The terms of the contract required Adams to appear in 8 movies per year, for the company.[7]
On September 17, 2002, Adams underwent breast enlargement surgery. Representatives of the Vivid label objected to this, preferring her natural breasts.
In 2002, Vivid hired Adams to star in Debbie Does Dallas: The Revenge, with plans for her to star in future films in the series. Vivid representatives considered Adams to be appropriate for the role, because of her blonde hair, her experience with football, and her Texas heritage. Adams found the role difficult, due to her long-standing, deep dislike of cheerleaders.
Adams is well-known among her fans for her performance of oral sex and her girl-girl scenes. Adams was nominated for Best Actress by AVN in 2003. In 2004, she won the award for Best Oral Sex Scene – Film for Heart of Darkness.
Adams has performed many times with Faith Adams. Sunrise Adams refers to Faith Adams as her "almost namesake," and claimed to have been "married" to Faith for two years.
On August 2, 2004, Adams appeared with Savanna Samson on Fox News's "The O'Reilly Factor", to promote their book, How to Have a XXX Sex Life.

Adams has performed in comedy and made personal appearances. Adams appeared on the cover of the Xbox and PlayStation 2 game, Backyard Wrestling 2: There Goes the Neighborhood, portraying herself, and was a spokeswoman for Pony Sports. Adams appeared in the skateboarding movie Grind. Adams actively invests in real estate, and owns several homes in California and Texas. Adams hopes to invest in a group of apartment dwellings. Adams is currently working on a business management degree via an online university.
In 2004, Adams renewed her contract with Vivid for 10 more years. Soon after, Adams chose to temporarily stop making adult films. Adams was then hired at Countrywide Home Mortgage in Fort Worth, Texas. On November 15, 2006 Adams announced that she would return to the adult film industry.[8]
Adams was featured as a promotional model for the Las Vegas nightclub Tangerine at Treasure Island.[9]
