Further information: Super Junior

Lee Sungmin became a trainee under SM Entertainment after he won first place at the 1st SM Youth Best Selection Best Outward Appearance in 2001. A year later Sungmin, along with Eunhyuk, Xiah Junsu, Typhoon, Rose, and Attack, who were placed in one project group, made a brief appearance in a show called Heejun vs. Kangta Battle of the Century Pop vs. Rock where Heejun and Kangta taught them techniques on singing. However, in 2003 the group was separated because Xiah Junsu debuted as a member of TVXQ and Typhoon, Rose, and Attack debuted as members of TRAX). Sungmin, however, stayed with Eunhyuk and both of them debuted as members of Super Junior two years later. On August 2005, Sungmin appeared briefly in the MBC drama, "Sea of Sisters."

Sungmin made an official debut on November 6, 2005 as a member of Super Junior. They performed the group's first single, "TWINS (Knock Out)" on SBS's Popular Songs. A year later Sungmin appeared in the SBS Banjun Theatre drama Finding Lost Time as a guest star acting alongside TVXQ's Micky Yoochun. In early 2007, Sungmin was placed in the six-piece Super Junior subgroup, Super Junior-T, and debuted on February 25, 2007, performing the subgroup's title single "Rokuko" on Popular Songs. Sungmin also replaced Kang-In as one of the key DJs of Reckless Radio and was hosting it with Sooyoung of Girls' Generation. Until February 3, 2008, Sunny, also a member of Girls' Generation, replaced Sooyoung. In June 2008, Sungmin made a comeback as a member of Super Junior-Happy, the fourth official Super Junior sub-unit. Their first mini album, Cooking? Cooking! was released on June 5, 2008.
