[edit] Overview
After finishing the previous season as champions of the Championship, Roy Keane looked to strengthen his squad for his first season as a Premiership manager. The Drumaville Consortium made good with their promise to financially back the manager, spending over £27 million on players during the summer, including the record-breaking signing of goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
Sunderland toured Ireland during pre-season, before a home game against Italian side Juventus to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Stadium of Light.
[edit] Events
- August 4: 25,000 see Sunderland draw 1-1 against Juventus in a game to mark ten years at the Stadium of Light.[citation needed]
- August 7: Sunderland spend £7m (to rise to £9m) on Scottish goalkeeper Craig Gordon. The signing made him Sunderland's most expensive player ever, and the most expensive goalkeeper in Britain.[citation needed]
- August 11: Sunderland beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on their return to top flight football[citation needed]
- September 11: Sunderland 1973 FA Cup Final legend Ian Porterfield died.[citation needed]
- November 24: Sunderland suffer their worst ever premiership defeat: 7-1 against Everton F.C. at Goodison Park[citation needed]
- April 26: Sunderland secure their Premier League status after home win against Middlesbrough F.C.[citation needed]
