Sunan Ampel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sunan Ampel was one of Wali Songo, nine saints who spread Islam in Java.

His origin is still a subject of dispute.

Some claim that he's a sayyid (descendant of the Holy Messenger Muhammad) and Muslim saint who spread Islam in Java of Hadramaut, South Yemen descent.

This theory believes in such genealogy: .Sunan Ampel @ Raden Rahmat @ Sayyid Ahmad Rahmatillah s/o

.Maulana Malik Ibrahim @ Ibrahim Asmoro s/o

.Syaikh Jumadil Qubro @ Jamaluddin Akbar Khan s/o

.Ahmad Jalaludin Khan s/o

.Abdullah Khan s/o

.Abdul Malik Al-Muhajir (Nasrabad,India) s/o

.Alawi Ammil Faqih (Hadhramaut) s/o

.Muhammad Sohib Mirbath s/o

.Ali Kholi' Qosam s/o

.Alawi Ats-Tsani s/o

.Muhammad Sohibus Saumi'ah s/o

.Alawi Awwal s/o

.Ahmad al-Muhajir s/o

.Isa Ar-Rumi s/o

.Muhammad An-Naqib s/o

.Ali Uradhi s/o

.Ja'afar As-Sodiq s/o

.Muhammad Al Baqir s/o

.Ali Zainal 'Abidin s/o

.Imam Hussain

Al-Husain the son of Ali bin Abu Tholib and Fatimah Az-Zahro binti Muhammad Rasulullah.

He is thus the descendant of Ahmad al-Muhajir, the great Hadhramaut saint who migrated from Basra, Iraq to Yemen to leave internal strife rampant during the time of the Abbasid Caliphate. His descendants are popularly recognised as the Saadah BaAlawi.

However, other theory claims that he's of Chinese descent and his real name is Bong Swi Hoo. [1]

What's clear is that he arrived at Java by 1445. He married Nyi Gede Manila, daughter of a Chinese captain at Tuban named Gan Eng Cu. This marriage produced at least one son, that also would became a 'wali', Sunan Bonang
