[edit] Eridu Genesis
Yes, Thorkild Jacobsen called the Ziusudra Epic "The Eridu Genesis" and yes, Genesis has material that is also found in the Zisudra Epic. But it is unwise to call it Eridu Genesis because the word Genesis reinforces a prejudice that the Ziusudra Epic was entirely mythical, instead of being based on an actual river flood at the end of the reign of an actual king Ziusudra. It is difficult enough to get people to treat Gilgamesh as an actual king, because of the fictional Epic that used his name. Even more so with Ziusudra. In case you haven't noticed, reputable Ancient Near East scholars distance themselves from Genesis, because they do not want anti-religious prejudices to discredit their work. It would be better to rename the Eridu Genesis article as Sumerian Flood Myth. Not just a link, but rename. Greensburger (talk) 17:04, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- I don't like the Genesis name either, because it makes the Sumerian story sound derivative of a later work. I'm happy to rename it Sumerian flood myth. Or better Sumerian flood legend? The only qualm I had about that was that the text also includes a creation myth, and I can't think of a title that reflects the two themes. (And, no, I'm not an unnoticing person. And Gilgamesh still has no archaeological evidence.) Sumerophile (talk) 17:59, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- How about "Sumerian origin legend"? Sumerophile (talk) 18:01, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- If you ignore the creation myth and not duplicate the Ziusudra article, there is not much remaining from the Ziusudra tablet. Maybe the new article could be renamed "Sumerian river flood (2900 BCE)" to refocus on what is archaeologically attested and Ziusudra would be mentioned only briefly to link the later legends to the Sumerian King List flood? Greensburger (talk) 02:05, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

- I'm not sure I entirely understand what you're proposing. I do know you that can't ignor away one part of the tablet and just focus on one thing. I'll move the stuff from Ziusudra pertaining to it (or you can do it too). This is a famous archeological document, and shouldn't be buried in with king lists and such in the Ziusudra article, and the article has to encompass the whole tablet. [edit] Stub templates
Please do not add redundant stub templates to articles. For instance, {{MEast-royal-stub}} is specific and already implies {{MEast-hist-stub}}, which implies the generic {{hist-stub}}. –Pomte 10:02, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Solved, by getting suitable stub templates created for this material[1].

[edit] Maps of Akkad and Sumer
Thanks for your kind words regarding my maps. I would be happy to make a map of the Sumer and Akkad time period. Let me see what references and sources I can find. Is there anything you had in mind?? Regarding the terrain background, I have never done this except with terrain elevation lines such as in the map of the Battle of the Gebora. I know that commons:user:Sting is quite successful at this, but I've never inquired as to his technique. Is there any particular feature you would like me to emphasize?? Regards, MapMaster (talk) 16:20, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Congratulations!
Congratulations on the high quality of your contributions to first civilisation topics. This is a much neglected area of Wikipedia and well researched input is very welcome.210.246.20.94 (talk) 18:53, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. Sumerophile (talk) 01:56, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] How should the article look?
I don't think I'm making you happy ;)
So what should be done? I suppose I never got a general statement from you... I apologize for that, and for keeping the case file kinda under wraps, where Til's statement is (I didn't want to carry the discussion over there; I find it's usually less helpful than when staying on the talk page). Xavexgoem (talk) 20:48, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm very sorry this turned out the way it did - I was thinking that things were on the right track... At any rate, I've asked Til or you to file a medcom request. Again: didn't mean for this to happen, and I lost my cool. Xavexgoem (talk) 15:58, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Aratta mediation
A request for mediation has been filed with the Mediation Committee that lists you as a party. The Mediation Committee requires that all parties listed in a mediation must be notified of the mediation. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Aratta, and indicate whether you agree or disagree to mediation. If you are unfamiliar with mediation on Wikipedia, please refer to Wikipedia:Mediation. Please note there is a seven-day time limit on all parties responding to the request with their agreement or disagreement to mediation. Thanks, Anthøny 17:16, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Yikes
Sometimes they just start clicking on whatever random thing they find, edit it, and move on and see how far they can get before they eat banhammer. :-) --Bobak (talk) 21:14, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Aratta mediation active
Good day. I have accepted Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Aratta, and will be serving as your case Mediator from here on in. Please take note of my statement on Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/Aratta, including the sections about party activity, and about getting in touch with me. I look forward to working with you for the next while; keep an eye on the case talk page for developments coming soon. Regards, Anthøny 16:40, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Request to move article Timeline of Ancient Mesopotamia incomplete
You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Timeline of Ancient Mesopotamia to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.
Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:
- Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
- Added {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved, to automatically create a discussion section there.
- Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.
If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 19:56, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Clock in: Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/Aratta
Please clock in at Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/Aratta. This is just a little exercise I do pre-mediation :) Anthøny 16:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] category Syriacs
the category Syriacs contains 123 articles. Do you think you can change category name to Syriac people? and then automaticaly all articles in that category changes category to Syriac people AramaeanSyriac (talk) 21:07, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
- You can do that - you don't need me to :). Sumerophile (talk) 21:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- But the problem is i dont know how AramaeanSyriac (talk) 14:14, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- Ahh -- go into Edit, and remove everything (categories etc.) from the old page and paste on the the new page.
- Then place a {{category redirect|category:xxx}} (where xxx is the new name) on the old page.
- I think a bot runs like once a week which will automatically change all the articles to the new cat, but it would be a good idea to manually put a few articles into the new cat, so that somebody doesn't come along and delete it for being empty.

[edit] Blocked
2 weeks for your recent disruptive editing. See also your block log. Moreschi (talk) (debate) 22:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- This is uncalled for. My history certainly shows I have not been making disruptive edits.
- And you have been trying to add me to an arbitration page which has nothing to do with anything I edit.
- Sumerophile (talk) 22:18, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- That last "block" was for one of the few actually constructive editors in the ancient Near East field trying to revert revolving IP-vandalism/Ararat Arev. Sumerophile (talk) 22:23, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- I came here to block you based on your edits to Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Armenia-Azerbaijan 2 - You have been placed on that arbitration page - that is all that matters.
- edit-warring against three admins to remove yourself from that page is not how you should appeal this.
- At the top of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Armenia-Azerbaijan 2 it says:
“ | Please do not edit this page directly unless you wish to become a participant in this case. ... Once the case is closed, editors may add to the "Log of blocks and bans" as needed, but closed cases should not be edited otherwise. Please raise any questions at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration#Requests for clarification. |
” |
-
- There is no provision there for removing yourself from the page. If you wish to appeal, there are many forum to do so. If you edit the page "Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Armenia-Azerbaijan 2" again, I will block this account permanently. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:35, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- John Vandenberg, you did not "add to the Log of blogs and bans", you added person to the page who has nothing to do with this controversy, and never has.
- Sumerophile (talk) 15:55, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

-
- If you read that page carefully, you will see that any administrator who is familiar with the case is permitted to add any user who they feel is involved. If you feel you have nothing to do with it, you need to request review of the administrators action ; removing yourself from that list isnt the way to appeal. - You know full well I don't edit articles under the scope of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, as this discussion shows.[2] You even argued Nairi's non-connection with this conflict to get User:Eupator off the hook for edit-warring on it. Sumerophile (talk) 14:21, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

-
- Your User:Eupator has definitely violated 1RR,[3] removed comments from a checkuser page,[4] and acted in consort with an editor who reverted the Hayasa-Azzi article back to the Armenian Nationalist version.[5] Sumerophile (talk) 17:31, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- Whatever the rights and wrongs of the present situation I hope that user Sumerophile will return to continue his excellent contributions to ancient Near East topics in general. Too much of the present input (from one prolific editor in particular) is unsupported and obsessive.210.246.16.189 (talk) 19:43, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
