Sumner Township is occupies a 6 mile square in Kankakee County, Illinois. The population was 879 at the 2000 census. Formed out of Manteno Township in September 1855, it includes the town of Whitaker.
It is located at 41.244057 N, -87.732366 W. It has 96.47 km² (37 sq mi). (37.25 square miles) of land. It has 310 housing units.

The township is governed by an elected Town Board of a Supervisor and four Trustees. The Township also has an elected Assessor, Clerk, Highway Commissioner and Supervisor. The Township Office is located at 9315 North 8000 East Road, Grank Park, IL 60940.
