Summit magazine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Summit magazine is a quartery magazine produced by the British Mountaineering Council in the United Kingdom.

It was started in 1996 by the BMC National Officer Andy Macnae, and had 48 pages. Alex Messenger became the editor in 2002. Until 2005 it was published by Greenshires Publishing (Greenshires publishing also owned both On The Edge and High magazines which were merged to form Climb magazine). Since 2005 Summit has been printed by Warners Group Publications (Warners also publish Climber magazine). It is now 78 pages long.

Summit is produced four times per year (Feb,May,Sept, Nov) and is sent direct to all British Mountaineering Council (BMC) individual members. People who are members of the BMC through an affiliated club only receive one copy - the February issue. The circulation therefore varies from 40,000 (May,Sept,Nov) to 65,000 (Nov). This makes it the largest circulation climbing magazine in the UK.

It is also available to purchase in the BMC online shop and available from selected mountain centres throughout the UK, such as Plas y Brenin in Capel Curig.

Back issues (back to issue 11) are available to download on the Summit section of the BMC website: http://www.thebmc.co.uk/summit

The magazine aims to cover articles of interest to all climbers, hill walkers, and mountaineers. It will frequently cover topics outside the remit of the mainstream magazines.

It has an online letters page: http://www.thebmc.co.uk/blogs/summit_letters/index.html

Summit articles are also frequently discussed at http://www.ukclimbing.com

It is not to be confused with an American magazine of the same name that existed in the 1970's and 1980's.
