Summit Centers Malibu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Summit Centers Malibu was an alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility in Malibu, California. The center offered residential treatment programs for individuals suffering from substance abuse. Its canyon location at the end of a long private road was chosen to give the center's rich and famous clients guaranteed privacy.[1] The complex was nestled in the Santa Monica mountains and overlooked the famed Malibu coastline, home to some of Hollywood's biggest names. It had a maximum number of twelve clients at any given time, which allowed for a 4:1 staff-to-client ratio.

Known clients included Ben Cousins, a well-known Australian rules footballer from Perth, Western Australia.

The clinical program was often heralded as well designed, integrated and evidenced-based. The program was touted as "A community Partnership with UCLA" and combined The Matrix Model and other medically recognized treatment protocols that resulted in effective support for its clients through a strong personal dedication of the on-site operating staff on all levels. However, although the program was solid and effective Summit's owner slowly caused the demise of Summit Centers by undermining the foundation and disrupting Summit's relationship with UCLA to the point that UCLA removed Summit Centers from their web site and discontinued referring clients.

Ultimately this forced the closing of Summit Centers on Dec 31 2007. Many staff and vendors are engaged in ongoing labor disputes and legal attempts to recover non-paid wages. Clients in residence at the time of closure were forced to seek treatment elsewhere.

A number of long term Summit staff are attempting to carry forward the vision of effective, compassionate, evidenced-based treatment in a new format with proper management. The program will include many aspects of the previously existing Summit model while drawing on their many years of combined experience in the drug and alcohol treatment industry.
