Summerfield High School

Summerfield High School is a high school located in the town of Petersburg, Michigan. Summerfield Elementary, Middle, and High School were all part of one building before 1975. In the year 1975 the high school building was built. The first class that graduated from the new building was the class of 1976. The mascot is the Bulldog. The school colors are Orange and Black.

Summerfield High School is a classified as a Michigan Class C public school. The total number of students enrolled at the high school is a little under 300 between four grades (9, 10, 11, and 12). The teaching staff is composed of 17 teachers and the average class size is 25 students. The school year is a 2 semester school year. The principal is Scott Leach and the superintendent is John S. Hewitt.
[edit] Graduation Requirements and Curriculum
To graduate from Summerfield High School you have to have 23 credits. The 23 credits must include a combination of required and elective courses. Summerfield offers a range of classes for being a small school. It offers Spanish for a foreign language. Chemistry and Physics are offered every other year. The students can also be a part of the cooperative program with other schools in the surrounding areas. Students can take college classes at Monroe County Community College in Monroe, Michigan. They can also go to another high school in the area for other classes. Some of the classes include; AP Calculus at Whiteford High School in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, other foreign language classes, or be a part of the Dundee FFA Chapter by taking the Agriculture class at Dundee High School in Dundee, Michigan.
[edit] Extracurricular activities
Summerfield has many clubs and sports to be a part of. Football, volleyball, and cheerleading are offered in the fall. Boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, and cheerleading are offered in the winter. In the spring there are the most sports to take part in; boys’ baseball, golf, boys track, girls’ track, softball, and golf. Clubs include National Honors Society, Spanish club, pep club, and school improvement. Students also elect others to be their class leaders in student government and student council. Each class elects a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and three students to be part of student council. Some of the class are part of the activities; journalism which produces the school paper called THE SOUNDER, graphic design which puts together the yearbook, and Band. Other things that students do at Summerfield is put on a play every year for the adults and kids in the area. The students also help by broadcast the announcements over the loud speaker.

Every year the classes compete for a day off school. There are events that are held through out the year for the students to particapate in and earn pride point. At the end of the year which ever class gets the most points get a day off to go some where to have fun and relaxes. Homecoming week and Coming home week are the biggest though. Through out these two weeks students pick a theme and then decorate the halls, build floats, make posters and have days where they dress in certain ways. There are also games held during lunch for points during these weeks. Classes can also get points for highest class GPA and highest class attendance average.
