"Summer Nights" is a rock song written by the group Van Halen for their 1986 album 5150. It is one of five singles issued for the album. Summer Nights sees the first use of Eddie Van Halen's Steinberger guitar, a super-compact guitar without a headstock or body. It was highly useful for this song in particular due to the fact that it can lock the string in place, changing the tone. Since Summer Nights goes through a sudden lock change from the normal setting to the 3rd fret, this becomes essential. The only other method of doing this would be using a capo, which would be very difficult to remove in time for the fret change.
