Summa Health System is one of the largest organized delivery systems in Ohio, encompassing a network of hospitals, community-based health centers, a health plan, a physician-hospital organization, an entrepreneurial entity, research and medical education and a foundation. Summa is has received praise for excellence in patient care and for exceptional approaches to healthcare delivery. Working collaboratively with many other healthcare institutions, Summa is a member of the Cleveland Health Network.

The System represents more than 1,200 licensed, inpatient beds on the Akron City, St. Thomas and Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital campuses. In addition, outpatient care is extended throughout Summit County in four community health centers and through partnerships with the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium and the Shaw Jewish Community Center. Summa’s Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals are teaching affiliates of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), including 13 accredited residency training programs. Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital is a teaching affiliate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM) and the Consortium of Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) offering seven accredited osteopathic residency programs. The Summa Hospitals Foundation, the system’s philanthropic entity, provides vital funding for medical education, research and patient-care initiatives and contributes more than $9 million annually to the system. Summa Health Network, Summa’s physician-hospital organization, represents more than 900 physicians. In 2005, Summa Health System joined Mercy Medical Center in Canton in ownership of Ohio Health Choice, a preferred provider organization. The Summa Enterprise Group creates for-profit opportunities to bring health-based products to market. SummaCare, the system’s health plan, received the highest accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and provides medical coverage for more than to 80,000 members in Northeast Ohio.

Summa Health System Hospitals offer quality, nationally designated care that includes a Level III Perinatal Center and Level I Trauma Unit, and serve as a regional kidney transplant center. Consistently ranked as one of the best healthcare providers in the country, Summa excels in heart, emergency, women’s health, stroke, orthopaedics, cancer and geriatric services. These services have been recognized by organizations such as the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, U.S. News & World Report and Solucient. Summa’s Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals include a staff of more than 1,000 physicians, more than 1,000 licensed beds and treat more than 100,000 patients in the emergency room each year.

[edit] Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital

Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital (CFGH) was founded on a principal of osteopathic medicine and joined Summa Health System in 2001. Today, the Hospital continues to deliver high-quality, surgical, obstetric, rehabilitative and ambulatory services that are true to its heritage of preventive and holistic medicine, focusing on the treatment of the whole person, not just the disease and its symptoms. Easy Street Rehabilitation Center and New Horizons Adult Day Services are the only programs of their kind in the Akron area. CFGH is a teaching affiliate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM) and the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE).

Summa Health System Foundation is a nonprofit philanthropic organization that supports the mission of Summa Health System – to provide the highest quality compassionate care to its patients and to contribute to a healthier community. The Foundation supports patient care, medical education and research through philanthropy. Donations are received from patients and their families, employees, physicians and members of the broader community. The Foundation contributes to the system an annual average of $9 million for the development of new programs, research projects, clinical innovations and other activities, all geared toward the support and advancement of excellent patient care.

Summa Health Network(SHN) is the physician-hospital organization affiliated with Summa Health System Hospitals, including Akron City and St. Thomas. SHN oversees mutually beneficial contracts with insurance companies, health-maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred-provider organizations (PPOs), employers, third-party administrators and other payors on behalf of Summa Health System Hospitals and their affiliated physicians. SHN helps ensure choice in a growing retail healthcare market. Patients benefit from a wide variety of health-insurance providers, which include Summa Hospitals in their networks. Summa Health Network offers a comprehensive network of providers in multiple counties in Northeast Ohio, including Summit, Medina and Portage counties.
