Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud (known as Hurre) was born in Garowe, in central Somalia, in 1957.
In 2000, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud was elected as sultan by his one of Majerten Omar Mohamud sub-clan. In 2002, in Puntland, the region where Sultan Hurre belonged was experienced political crisis when the regional president, Colonel Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed’s three year period, was expiring. President Abdullahi refused to call for elected and instead planned to extend unconstitutionally his time. The majority of the traditional leaders rejected President Abdullahi Yusuf’s extension and instead called for a conference which elected Jama Ali Jama as president. Sultan Hurre was one of these traditional leaders.
On the 17 August 2002, Sultan Hurre was killed in the hands of the personal bodyguards of the personal bodyguards of President of Puntland, Colonel Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed. Col Abdullahi admitted his bodyguards killed the Sultan (Case NO: HQ02X03221 Supreme Court of England and Wales).
