[edit] History
In the beginning of its existence, Sulphur High was merely a crude wooden structure having only one room. By 1910, however, a new brick addition was built by John T. Henning, which in 1914 eventually replaced the old wooden school building. This allowed Sulphur High to be state approved.
By the 1940s, Sulphur High had become rather overcrowded and outdated, so in September of 1941, SHS was rebuilt. Forty years later it was torn down and a new, more modern structure was built, being completed in 1980.
In the late 1980s the "South Wing" was renovated and new, larger art classrooms were added.
To accommodate the ever growing community, SHS was recently renovated yet again. During 1997 and 1998, the old auditorium was gutted and transformed into the new English building with a connecting new auditorium. Second story walkways were added to connect the new building with the three pre-existing buildings, allowing easy upstairs access between all of the buildings. Two clock towers were also built on opposite sides of the campus. The year of 1999 saw the addition of four new classrooms in the science wing along with renovations to the press box at Matt Walker Stadium.
With continued growth in the community, the school administration decided to build a Ninth Grade Campus to elimate overcrowding on the main campus while also creating a more structured and personalized learning environment that would meet the needs of incoming ninth graders. The new Ninth Grade Campus, located east of the campus where the rodeo area once stood, opened its doors in the 2005-2006 school year.
In the years to come, if the past is any indication, one can expect Sulphur High to continue its growth to match the rapid growth of the city of Sulphur.
