Suleiman Laeq

Suleiman Layeq (born 1930), also spelled as Laiq, Laeq, Laweq, Layeq) was an Afghan Communist and the Communist regime's ideologue. He was also a poet and politician.

Initially a student of the College of Theology, graduated from the College of Literature in 1957. Lawiq was an exellente poet and writer in Pashtu and Dari. During 1957-68, Layeq held different posts in the national controlled media.

One of his sister was married to Mir Akbar Khaiber (a leading leftlist idealogue whose murder in 1978 started the Great Saur Revolution) while other sister was married to Sibghatullah Mojadeddi (who would later become President of Afghanistan).

He was also founder of the newspaper Parcham, in 1968. Toguether with Babrak Karmal, reprensented the moderate faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan.

At the same time, he became a permanent member of the Central Committee of the Parcham parliamentary group.

In 1978 , after Saur Revolution, he became Secretary of Cultural Affairs (Minister for radio and television) After the communist coup he also became Minister of radio and television and for a time was admitted to membership of the politburo after the government had expelled the Parchamis.

After the Khalq Government had removed most Parchamis, it took up Lawiq first occasionally than member of the Politburo, he was imprisoned for being pro-Karmal, but the authorities treated him mildly.

1980 after the invasion of the Red Army it held first some unimportant posts. By this time he had become a member of the central committee of the Parcham faction of the PDPA and a close associate of Khybar, his brother-in-law.

However, by 1981 he was promoted to President of the Academy of Sciences, full member of the Afghan Politburo, and Minister of Nationalities and tribal affairs

He watched from his window as the Mujaideen swarmed through the city of Kabul , claiming building after building. Without exception, he said of them, they follow the way of the fundamentalist aims and goals of Islam.
