Sugar Grove is a nice small town convenient to the Appalachian Trail, which crosses highway 16 at the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Center Visitor's Center, about 3 miles out of town (the Partnership shelter is located at the MRNRA visitor's Center). Of interest to hikers are two convenience stores and the Sugar Grove Diner, which offers excellent diner-style cuisine. Sugar Grove Diner also offers B&B rooms.

The Konnarock Crew of the Appalachian Trail Conference has their headquarters at the US Forest Service work center located in Sugar Grove. The Konnarock Crew is one of several volunteer crews with professional crew leaders operated by the Appalachian Trail conference.

Piedmont Appalachian Trail Hikers (PATH) maintains the Appalachian Trail starting about 8 miles South of the Mt. Rogers Visitor Center to about 50 miles North, around Burke's Garden.
