Sugama Sangeetha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sugama Sangeetha, alternately called light music, is the semi-classical form of Indian Music, influenced by both the systems of Indian Music. All states have Sugama Sangeetha of their regional language. Metrical Poetry written in regional language is set to tune by composers. A group of musicians comprised of one or more singers with percussion support and one or two lead instruments (sitar, flute etc.) supported by guitar and bass guitar performs these songs. Of late, electronic keyboards and synthesizers have crept in as the lead instruments making traditional classical instruments less prominent. This form of music was initially conceived and nurtured by All India Radio, the state owned broadcasting organisation of India. Presently, this has been the most popular form of music among the Indian people.
