Sufi rock is a form of Pakistani rock music which describes the sound of Junoon. Nadeem F. Paracha claims to have coined the term in 1993 to define the band, who pioneered the process of fusing conventional rock music with Sufi music and imagery. The term became popular in Pakistan and today has successfully carved out its own genre. Many new bands today are following the footsteps of Junoon such as Mekaal Hasan. Most Sufi rock is sung in the Urdu language.
