[edit] Background

Before she joined WNBC, Simmons was with WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., from 1976 to 1979, where she co-anchored with Jim Vance. Prior to her arrival at WRC, she was with WBAL-TV in Baltimore from 1974 to 1976. There, she was an anchor for the station's Action News broadcast and the "Baltimore At One". She was one of the first female black anchors on television. She began her career as a consumer action reporter at WTNH-TV in New Haven, Connecticut.[1]

[edit] WNBC

Simmons is a native New Yorker. Since 1980, she has been co-anchor for Live at Five with several co-anchors, including Jack Cafferty, Tony Guida, Matt Lauer, Dean Shepherd, Jim Rosenfield, and Perri Peltz. Weeknights at 11 p.m., she co-anchors with Chuck Scarborough. Chuck and Sue (as they are affectionately known in New York) have been together since Simmons' arrival at WNBC — the longest run for an anchor team in New York television history.[2] She is one of the highest paid anchors in New York, making $2.5 million a year.[3]

On Groundhog Day, and live on Live at Five, Simmons does a facial impression of a groundhog for fun.[4] Simmons is mentioned in the Fountains of Wayne song "Traffic & Weather" from their 2007 album of the same title.[5]

[edit] On-air profanity

On May 12, 2008, as a news teaser was played during the TV series Medium, Simmons can be heard saying "The fuck are you doing?!" She said this after the on-air video changed to the second news topic. At 11:06 p.m., during the newscast, Simmons made a public apology on air about her foul language.[6][7]

The incident has been mocked in several sketches on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman.[8]
