Subhash Bhowmick nicknamed Bhombal born at West Bengal is an Indian Football international player and a club level Coach and Manager[1]. During his playing career he represented the "Big Two" of Kolkata football East Bengal Club and Mohun Bagan AC. He also represented India in various international tournaments from 1970[2].

Bhowmick joined East Bengal Club in 1969 and after spending a season there joined Mohun Bagan in 1970. At the end of 1973 season, he returned to East Bengal and represented them till 1976 after which he joined Mohun Bagan again. After the 1977-78 season, he returned to East Bengal and retired in 1979.[3] During his playing years, he was known as a thrusty and powerfull forward with good goal scoring abilities.[4]

Bhowmick represented India in various tournaments. He was a member of the Indian football team that won the Bronze medal in the Asian Games in 1970. He also represented India in Merdeka Cup and Pesta Sukan Tournament.[5]
[edit] Coaching career
Subhash Bhowmick has been very successful as a coach for the East Bengal Club.[6] He had a fogettable first stint with the same club during 1999-2000 season. But during his second stint as a coach, the club won a multitude of trophies including back to back NFL titles in 2002-03 and 2003-04 apart from Kolkata Football League, Durand Cup and IFA Shield.[7] East Bengal also won the LG ASEAN Club Cup in 2003 under his managership. Bhowmick stepped down as the Coach of the East Bengal Club in 2005 after he was caught in an alleged bribery scandal.[8]
He coached Mohammedan Sporting Club during 2006 season, but was not as successful as his stint with East Bengal. In 2007, a relegation threatened Salgaocar SC appointed Subhash Bhowmick their Technical Director.[9] He has remained as the Technical Director of the Goan outfit for the 2008 season also.[10]
[edit] Bribery Allegations
Subhas Bhowmick was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation sleuths allegedly for taking a bribe. According to the CBI sources, he was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 150,000 from a businessman near Calcutta South Club in his capacity as an officer of the anti-evasion department of Central Excise.[11] The matter is still sub-judice.
