In episode 19 Recollection, several flashbacks of Subaru's past show her first steps in The World. Although she didn't know anything about the game, Subaru spent many hours logged in, just wandering around the various Root Towns.

Because of her odd behavior Subaru drew the attention of many players, some times wanting to take advantage of her inexperience. At some point she was met by Crim and he taught her to stand up for herself. Crim told her that that way people would come to her in a positive manner, willing to be friends, which was one of Subaru's main reasons for playing the game.

Together they founded the Crimson Knights, an unofficial player organization designed to bring order to The World. Through the Knights Subaru became acquaintance with The World's administration and well known players like Balmung and Orca.

At the beginning of the series, being the leader of the Crimson Knights Subaru takes an interest in Tsukasa. With the help of a system administrator she learns that Tsukasa has been logged in for the last 10 days. Wanting to talk with him Subaru gives an order to make Tsukasa a wanted on all servers of The World, but behind her back, her second in command Silver Knight goes further and uses the Knights to capture him.

In the place where Tsukasa is being held, Subaru has a conversation with him but they get interrupted by Sora. She is intrigued by the wavemaster, and decides to find out more about him.

This proves not to be an easy task as Silver Knight foils every attempt they make to meet each other, believing that someone important like her should have nothing to do with an illegal character like Tsukasa. When she becomes aware of this, and realizes how far the Knights has gone from its original purpose, Subaru decides to disband the Guild. After this she joins up with Bear and Mimiru in the search for a way to help Tsukasa log out of the game, and builds a strong relationship with him.

At the end of the series, Tsukasa, Subaru, and Mimiru goes where Aura is being held by Morganna. With Subaru supporting him, Tsukasa is able to find the courage to defy Morganna, triggering Aura's awakening, and allowing him to log out.

[edit] .hack//Zero

In .hack//Zero, a message posted on the BBS by Carl (main character of the novel) reaches Mariko Misono (Subaru's player), who logs into The World for the first time since the events in .hack//Sign. Carl meets Subaru wanting to learn more about Sora. Subaru tells her about Aura and An Shouji (Tsukasa's player) as Sora is in a similar condition Tsukasa was in. Carl doesn't understand Subaru and eventually walks away in irritation.

[edit] .hack//Games

In Quarantine, a player posts a message on the BBS wanting to meet Subaru at Obedient Someone's Knights. She does not show up, but Crim appears and gives Kite his Spear. At the end of Quarantine, Helba creates a Subaru AI from a compilation of Subaru's data fragments, in order to help Kite. The real Subaru doesn't appear in the Games herself.

[edit] Unison

She meets up with Mimiru, BT, BlackRose, and Tsukasa in a bar in Carmina Gadelica. After other characters appear they go to Net Slum to join in the celebration hosted by Helba. At the party Subaru dances with Tsukasa, and they spot Aura looking down from the sky. They greet her with the same hand gesture she made when Tsukasa awakened her.

In real life, Subaru is a paraplegic girl named Mariko Misono. She lost her ability to walk four years prior to the events in .hack//Sign,[2] after getting involved in a car accident (probably one of many incidents caused by the Pluto's Kiss virus that took place the same year). She spends so much time in The World because it is the only place where she can roam freely on her own.[3]

At the end of the series she meets An Shouji when the latter is leaving the hospital. They greet each other with a hand gesture they only use between the two of them and Aura, and run towards each other with tears in their eyes. After the series Mariko and An start dating.[1]
