AWM Caption: ON 1942-05-31, AUSTRALIA MADE ITS FIRST ACQUAINTANCE WITH JAPANESE SUBMARINES. THREE OF THEM SNEAKED INTO SYDNEY HARBOUR AND THEIR COMBINED EFFORTS RESULTED IN THE SINKING OF A SMALL HARBOUR VESSEL OF NO MILITARY VALUE. WITHIN AN HOUR OR SO OF THEIR ENTRANCE ONE HAD BEEN SUNK BY GUNFIRE AND THE OTHER TWO BY DEPTH CHARGES. THIS PHOTO SHOWS THE BURIAL SERVICE BEING HELD FOR THE NAVAL MEN KILLED DURING THE JAPANESE SUBMARINE ATTACK IN SYDNEY HARBOUR.
