[edit] Merging of articles

What should we do about the Grampian Television and Scottish Television articles? Should they be merged into one article or what? I've made Grampian and Scottish redirect to STV for the time being but if needed changed, go ahead. --AntzUK 22:52, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Grampian has 45 years of history behind it, so dumping it from Wikipedia because SMG have been so very, very stupid isn't a folly we should repeat.
Could we do something dab-like at the top?:

Grampian is now known as STV. For the current operations of this TV station, see STV.

This article is about the history of the ITV broadcaster for central Scotland. For current information, see STV.

That's if there's actually a genuine issue here. If the issue is sematics, then a link in both articles saying "from 30 May 2006 Scottish and Grampian adopted the joint branding "STV"" and leave it at that should do. ЯЄDVERS 18:22, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requested Move: STV to stv?

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was no move. -- Kjkolb 09:10, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I noticed that the title of the article is STV, but many editors have changed articles which has STV with stv and the website [1] refers to the name as stv. Does anyone know if the title should stay as STV or be moved to stv? Although noting that the title if it should be stv will have to be Stv with the {{lowercase|article}} tag, denoting that The title of this article should be stv. The initial letter is capitalized due to technical restrictions. --Sonic 19:35, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Survey

Please Add *Support or *Oppose followed by an optional one-sentence explanation, then sign your opinion with ~~~~
  • Weak oppose (unless one actually pronounces the name "sstvv"). If one pronounced it "sstvv," British English would be prefer Stv as the name, American English would prefer (actually, require) STV, and other dialects would vary. But there is no dialect in which it would be stv. However, my guess is that one actually says "S-T-V," in which case the correct spelling in all dialects is STV. The spelling on the Web site is a weird (though not utterly rare) "house style." We shouldn't let it guide us here, seems to me (Unless "stv" created their name to distinguish themselves from a diff. entity called "STV.") --Cultural Freedom talk 2006-07-02 11:10 (UTC)
  • Oppose
I think the article title should stay as STV, as Stv looks messy, and the reference should stay as stv, as that is the channels actual name, not STV.

[edit] Discussion

Add any additional comments should go here:
  • The only thing I need to add to the discussion is that if the survey comes out as Oppose, then it will also have an impact on the way that STV/stv is displayed in articles. Some users have changed any instance of STV to stv, if the debate here comes out as Opposed, the changes from STV to stv in these articles will have to be reverted. It isn't just a question of a simple move of STV to stv, just like the ITV or ITV1 debate on the Talk:Freeview pages, it'll determine whether we should use STV or stv. --tgheretford (talk) 12:16, 2 July 2006 (UTC) - Formerly known as Sonic

[edit] Removed logo gallery

The gallery of logos is not fair use. They were not being used to provide critical commentary, and the quanity of them exceeds the 'limited' criteria. The JPStalk to me 12:46, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] section stv.tv

IMHO this section contributes nothing of importance to the the article and can be summarized to a sentence. Thoughts?

[edit] Requested Move: STV to STV (Scotland)?

The title of the article is STV, but an editor, Metalim has changed this to STV (Scotland). Do you think the title should stay as STV or be moved to STV (Scotland)?
GMc 20:55, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Moved back. Disambiguation for the sake of disambiguation is pointless. RΞDVΞRSЯΞVΞЯSΞ 21:23, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Didn't quite get it. STV (Scotland) → back to STV? Hmm, ok. But why did you erase STV (Estonia) from STV (disambiguation)? Is Scottish television network so much more important than Estonian television network?—lim 21:30, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
I'd suggest that the Scottish one is far more important. BBC aside, it is the major broadcaster in Scotland and has been so since 1957. Can it really be compared with a cable channel? I think I'd actually prefer it if it were Wikipedia policy for the main space for articles with more that one meaning went to a disambiguation page so these judgements didn't have to be made, but as long as were having it that the main name belongs to the article people are most likely to be looking for, the Scottish station wins by a long way Identz 16:41, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Actually, it has occurred to me that Single transferable vote might be a better candidate for "primary meaning", but that's a whole other can of worms. Chris cheese whine 00:33, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
That's actually very good point. Though Scottish Television has changed it's name so it is officially called "STV" these days whereas it would only be an abreviation of Single Transferable vote so in that respect I'd think the TV station deserves the name more. But you're completely right that if it's purely on what most people are expecting to see then maybe it is the voting system Identz 03:48, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
