[edit] Goals and purposes
The main aim of starting the society was the overall development of the average engineering student and building up his technical skills which would enable him to face future competition and further career challenges more confidently.
[edit] Structure of the society
The SFE council basically consists of 3 parts/levels:
a)The senior council
Consisting of members from the fourth year, they have an advisory role and supervise the working of the Junior Council. Society policies, interaction with the heads of other societies and coordination with the college authorities is handled by them. The current Senior Council has four members holding a total of 4 different posts- the President and Senior Treasurer, the Vice President and the Technical Cell(senior).
b)The Junior Council
Selected from the Third Year members, the Junior Council plans, schedules, publicises and executes all the society events. It also oversees the making and distribution of both society publications as well as feedback on the same. The society website is also manned by the Junior council. The various posts/cells under the Junior Council are the Secretary, the Junior Treasurer, the Technical and Media Cell, the Planning and Management Cell and the Publicity Cell.
c)Co-ordinators
Consisting of members from the second year, the co-ordinators play an important role in the functioning of the society by assisting the Junior Council in the publicity and execution of all events. Being Second Year students and having direct access to the other members, they act as the face of SFE in the second year.
[edit] Events
SFE holds a variety of events throughout the year and there is a perfect blend of software and hardware events. In addition to this, SFE also holds a number of workshops aimed at teaching members new things. The events are open to both the Second and Third years unless mentioned specifically. A general list of the events held every year are as follows:
1.Hardware event
SFE's flagship event which contains three sub parts: the open hardware contest, the online hardware hunt and the on the spot hardware event. It also includes a PSPICE workshop to instruct the students on the usage of PSPICE, a simulation software. The open hardware contest is a team event which allows participants to present any hardware of their choice which is more or less based on their own idea. Points are given for originality and creativity. The online hardware hunt is an online individual event. The concept varies from year to year. The latest online hardware hunt had a winner based on a combination of points and speed. The on the spot hardware event is a team based one which has a paper based elimination round first followed by a problem solving session for the selected teams. The PSPICE workshop instructs the members on the usage of this software which helps in the simulation of analog circuits. Along with the use of PSPICE in the event, this software is also needed academically for the Second year students and hence the workshop assumes a great importance. The individual with the highest number of points at the end of the year is awarded the title of "Hardware Genius", the highest individual title in any event throughout the year.
2.Software event
The open software event is a team based event, which invites participants to present their original software applications coded in any language. Points, are given for ingenuity, simplicity, practicality and the usefulness of the software.
3.Technical paper presentation
The TPP(technical paper presentation) offers a platform to all members of the society to present a study paper based on any technical topic of their choice. There are two rounds, an elimination round and finals. The finals are separately judged for the Second Years and the Third Years with separate winners from both sections.
4.Article writing competition
This competition invites technical articles from students, with points awarded for self research, innovation and relevance. The top three articles from the Second and Third years separately are printed in the annual magazine, Intelect.
5.Online treasure hunt
An online quiz competition, which is based on the speed with which a participant completes the quiz from the start till end.
6.Co-ord event
This event (for the Second year students) gives a chance to the second year SFE co-ordinators to put up an event right from scratch. The planning, management and execution of the event is left up to the co-ordinators. The latest co-ord event was titled "Quizine" (a take off on the word cuisine).
7.Mock Gate
Conducted a few weeks prior to the actual GATE examination this exam gives members an idea of what to expect in the final examination. The mock gate consists of questions mainly drawn from previous year papers and has a continually varying pattern. This event is also open to the final year students.
8.TechTests
In view of the placements SFE regularly conducts branch specific tech test to ensure that the members are well-versed with the subjects taught in previous semesters and can rise up to the challenge of the actual placement tech test with ample practice and preparation.
9.VB workshop
In collaboration with CSI, SFE held a Visual Basic workshop last year which aimed at teaching members of both societies the basics of coding in this highly versatile language.
10.Photoshop workshop
Conducted by former president of SFE Mr.Kunal Atitkar, this workshop aimed at teaching the members the basics of Photoshop, a widely used image editing software .
In addition to the above events, SFE also has orientation lectures before each and every major event to brief the members about the various details associated with that event.
[edit] Annual Symposium
SFE hosts an annual symposium to sum up the year's events, called SPARX. The symposium basically consists of a lecture delivered by an industry expert on a pertinent technical topic affecting everyone in some or the other manner. The lecture is followed by a prize distribution ceremony where the winners of the year's events are felicitated. The symposium culminates with refreshments for all registered members.
[edit] Publications
SFE has two publications:a quarterly newsletter called "Email" and an annual magazine called "IntElect". "Email" serves the purpose of keeping the members up to date with the latest in the various engineering fields through articles written by the members themselves. "IntElect" basically consists of the prize winning articles from the second and third years and also consists of a medley of other fun articles on the lines of the "Email". In addition to articles, the magazines also feature quizzes, puzzles, jokes, trivia and various other writings that interest the members. Both the publications provide a platform for all members to express their literary and technical skills.
[edit] Website
SFE actively maintains a website which hosts the online events. In addition to this, the website also offers various updates on the other events taking place and has many resources for download like the syllabus for various branches of various years and also past issues of "Email" and "Intelect".
