Stuart Dew (born 18 August 1979 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a Australian rules footballer for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League.
He debuted with the Port Adelaide Football Club in 1997, their inaugural year in the AFL, but it wasn't until the 1998 season that he received regular selection. He was occasionally criticised for his lack of dedication on the training track; however as he matured, Dew became an important player for the Power as evidenced during the 2004 season when he booted 31 goals and was a part of the club's premiership.
The 2005 season saw Dew play a running half-back role and played in all 24 games for Port. He complemented Port recruit Nathan Lonie, in that they played similar roles.
Dew was most recognised for his "raking" (as described by many commentators) left-foot kicks, which would often reach over 50 metres. The runs generated by Dew often lead to many goals from outside the 50-metre arc.
On November 6 2006, Dew announced his retirement from the AFL.[1].
Despite not playing football at any level during 2007, Dew announced his intentions to come out of retirement to pursue an AFL career again. He nominated himself for the 2007 AFL National draft and was selected by the Hawthorn Football Club with its third round selection (#45 overall).
Dew was notorious for arriving at Hawthorn grossly overweight at about 115kg, although after training 5 times a day to shed weight he was down to 105kg for the weigh-in and is now believed to weigh about 100kg. Dew played his first match for Hawthorn against Melbourne in Round 1 2008, recking up 25 disposals and kicking 2 goals as one of the Hawks' best in their 104 point demolition of Melbourne.
