[edit] Cleanup needed
Wiki is an encyclopedia, not a personal exposition.
Personal opinion is not the focus, and statements such as "In the early 1980s, skateboarding was dead", are completely inappropriate, because they are subjective, improvable, and, in a literal sense, untrue. Statements such as "marks the birth of the golden age of street skating" are just subjective and improvable, but they are still contrary to Wiki style guidelines WP:PEACOCK. Statements such as "the title 'professional skateboarder' was little more than a formality" don't make sense, because "formality" is the wrong word (when what is probably meant is that there were hardly any professional skateboarders).
Because there is so much of this language, the article needs to be rewritten. It should not sound like an essay or a magazine article or a blog, it should read like something from a published encyclopedia.

[edit] Cleanup
This article was definitely up to Wikipedia standards when I first wrote it in August 2005. Unfortunately since that time it seems to have undergone a major transformation, and is now disfigured to the point where only the opening paragraph resembles the original article.
So I agree with you, and I will try my best to rewrite this article in my spare time. Would anyone like to help me?
One more thing--There isn't a lot of formal academic literature on the subject of skateboarding out there. To be honest, between 1970 and 2008, there are only a handful of reliable hardcover titles published ( I'd say less than 50 ). Most information on skateboarding comes from magazines ( Transworld Skateboarding, Thrasher, Skateboarder, SLAP, Concrete Powder, etc. ) and oral history. I know these aren't really things that wikipediaites like to rely upon for articles ( I've read many skateboard article related complaints coming from users /sysops who know very little about the subject ), but alas that's just the way that skate history works at the present moment.

- Yes, and since there's not much literature, the appropriate people to help would be those with a good deal of personal knowledge. I hesitated to change anything at all, because it was so difficult to distinguish between information that's commonly accepted in the community and that which represents a minority view.
- While we're on the subject of requests though (ha, ha), our local skateboard shop has variations on the conventional four wheel design, a couple of which are so unusual I wasn't sure they were actually made for riding. It would be nice for the article skateboard to describe them, and perhaps for this article to describe how they are used?

[edit] I was mistaken
The opening paragraph sucks now too :P Ah well, guess it's time for a total overhaul!
