Structural Engineering Division, Anna University

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Structural Engineering Division of the Civil Engineering Department, College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University was established in the year 1955 with the main objective of providing higher education in the field of structural engineering. Now the thrust is to develop the division into a centre of excellence in research, consultancy and continuing education programmes in both structural engineering and construction management.

[edit] Postgraduate programmes

The M.E. degree Programmes in Structural Engineering and Construction Engineering & Management was started in the year 1955. The division has produced nearly 650 postgraduates in Structural Engineering over the last four decades.

The Department offers courses and programs at a variety of levels to address the needs of those who are interested in construction management. There is a nationally-accredited Construction Management program that prepares individuals for entry-level industry positions. The Department offers both classroom-based Master of Science in Construction Management programs that prepare individuals for middle management positions. The Department is also part of a college-wide interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in the Built Environment that provides students an opportunity for in-depth study into construction management issues. All the students are trained with software tools like Primavera & MS Project.

Many of them are occupying high and responsible positions in government, private and public sector organizations in India and abroad. It has achieved this with considerable pride and excellence.

Currently Professor Dr.Devadas Manokaran is the Head of the Division.

[edit] Construction Engineering and Management

Construction Management is the management of the fascinating and complex process that results in the built environment, the roads, bridges, buildings and industrial facilities upon which we all depend. It involves marshaling the resources required -- labor, materials, equipment, time and money -- and translating the work of design professionals such as architects and engineers into tangible things. Managing construction involves organizing a wide variety of skilled workers and specialists and leading them in the implementation of the plan, monitoring progress against baseline objectives, and making adjustments to ensure that the goals originally set forth are achieved. The construction industry needs personnel with the entrepreneur's spirit resourceful, imaginative, determined, well-educated problem solvers to accomplish its tasks. Communication skills, business acuity, engineering knowledge, and an understanding of the changing society that the industry serves are essential to success in the profession.

Projects growing in size and complexity are creating enormous need for professionally educated, Project Engineers and Managers capable of meeting the increasing demand in Engineering, Execution and Management of the multidisciplinary projects in Mechanical, Electrical, Petroleum and Chemical fields along with Telecom, Pharmaceutical, Automobile, Services and other sectors. This two year full time Post Graduate programme programme aims at developing professional project managers with the skills to solve the multifaceted project management problems of all these business sectors.
