Released in 1986, Strong Persuader was Robert Cray's breakthrough album to the mainstream and his small fanbase grew significantly. "Strong Persuader" also became a nickname for Cray.

As far as studio albums go, False Accusations came before it in 1985, and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was his next release, in 1988.

Cray's music contains sometimes sexual lyrics, which are showcased on Strong Persuader. Some lyrics from "Fantasized," for example: "She had sugar-sweet lips and magical hips just like I fantasized, what a slow ride, she moaned and she cried just like I fantasized."

In 1989, Strong Persuader was ranked #42 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s.
