Stringband
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stringband was a Canadian folk music band, active in the 1970s. Consisting of the core duo Marie-Lynn Hammond and Bob Bossin, the band also included guest musicians Jerry Lewycky, Ben Mink, Terry King, Zeke Mazurek, Calvin Cairns, Dennis Nichol and Nabcy Ahearn at various times.
The band initially played in Ontario coffeehouses and universities, later touring across Canada. They also toured in Mexico in 1977 and performed in Japan at Expo '85. On Canada Day in 1981, the band mounted a 10th anniversary show at Harbourfront; other artists on the bill included Ferron and Stan Rogers.
The band's repertoire included original songs in English and French, songs by Rogers, Angèle Arsenault, Wade Hemsworth and Connie Kaldor, as well as traditional material and satirical novelty songs. Bossin's "Dief Will Be the Chief Again" was a minor radio hit in 1975.
The band released its albums on their own independent label, Nick Records, one of Canada's first successful independent musician-run record labels. Hammond and Bossin each pursued solo careers after Stringband, but have performed reunion shows from time to time. Bossin continued to release his solo material on Nick Records.
