Der Stricker was the pseudonym of a 13th century Middle High German itinerant poet whose real name has been lost to history. His works include a German adaptation of the Song of Roland, an epic, "Karl" and an Arthurian romance, Daniel von Blumenthal. He wrote above all many brief narratives, named "exempla" or "bispel". Priests enjoyed this kind of stories, that allowed to animate the sermon. His most famous comic figure is "phaffe Âmis", (priest Amis), an english clerk, who fools everybody.
His nickname means "the knitter", possibly in reference to his messing of tales.
