As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,474 people, 612 households, and 386 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,434.7 people per square mile (552.5/km²). There were 714 housing units at an average density of 695.0/sq mi (267.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 80.39% White, 0.75% African American, 15.26% Native American, 0.61% from other races, and 2.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.83% of the population.
There were 612 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $19,375, and the median income for a family was $26,210. Males had a median income of $24,583 versus $14,688 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,247. About 20.1% of families and 24.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.1% of those under age 18 and 16.9% of those age 65 or over.

When the railroad didn't lay tracks to Mcgee, the buildings were put on wagons and wheeled down two miles south to the train tracks. The name was changed to Stratford and grew up quickly around agriculture. Stratford is known as the Peach capital of Oklahoma and holds it's Peach Festival, annual rodeo, and car show the second Saturday each July.
