Stratfield Turgis & Hartley Wespall Cricket Club

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stratfield Turgis and Hartley Wespall CC are a cricket club based at Turgis Green, Stratfield Turgis, Hampshire. The club's origins are unfortunately unclear with no evidence, save popular hearsay, to support its foundation date of 1811.

[edit] Modern History

The club played in the Northern Regional Division of the Hampshire League until 1977, when it left to become a founding member of the Berkshire Cricket League. During the period 1973-1980, the club shared its ground with Tylehurst St. George CC. In 1981, the two clubs merged and the new club ran two Saturday league sides, a Sunday XI and a Colts XI.

Whilst the period between 1980-1985 were very disappointing years on the Cricket field, with both the 1st and 2nd XI relegated, the latter part of the 1980’s were a period of renaissance for the club. In 1986, Martin Sandland led the lst XI to the Runners-up spot in Division 3 of the Berkshire Cricket League. The clubhouse underwent a major transformation in 1988 with extensions to the bar area and kitchen, improved toilets and most importantly, a new roof. Work finished in time for the start of the 1989 season.

Cricketing success continued during the 1990s, with the 2nd XI, led by Grant Strudley, finishing as winners of (2nd XI) Division 2 of the Berkshire Cricket League in 1991 and runners-up in (2nd XI) Division 1 in 1994. The 1st XI's finished runner-ups in Division 2 of the Berkshire Cricket League in 1995.

In 1996 the club received a grant of £6,300 to improve the water supply to the wicket, to extend the gents toilets and for a permanent outdoor net to be built.

In 2001, the club won the Berkshire Cricket League Knockout Cup.

The club continues to field two Saturday league sides, but no Sunday XI. Instead the club is proud to host Hampshire County Cricket Club Disability XI on Sundays throughout the season.
