Strömsund Municipality (Strömsunds kommun) is a municipality in Jämtland County, Sweden, where Strömsund is seat.

The nearest larger city is Östersund, the provincial capital of Jämtland, which is located approximately 100 km to the south.

Strömsund Municipality was formed in 1974 through the amalgamation of the former municipalities of Fjällsjö, Frostviken, Hammerdal and Ström. The most populous locality in the area, Strömsund, was chosen as administrative centre, and it also gave its name to the new entity.

[edit] Geography

With an area of roughly 10,500 km², it is the sixth largest in Sweden, and one of the most sparsely populated. The town has a municipal population of about 3,700 and is located on the slopes of Ströms vattudal, the river that flows through the town. Among locals, the town itself is usually referred to as Ström or Flata (a reference to the flack slope on which the central parts of the town is built).

[edit] Industry

Forest industry has traditionally been an important industry, but today tourism also has an important part. Like the rest of Jämtland, nature is what attracts visitors, with its blend of forests, mountains, lakes and rivers.

The tourism business had a turnover of 127 million crowns in 2002. The largest part of this (43%) was generated through transport, where the most significant post was people buying gasoline (fueling their car) travelling through the municipality.

Of those that stayed, the most visited sights in 2002 were:

  1. Hällingsåfallet 12,000 visitors
  2. Hembygdsgården, Strömsund 12,000
  3. Lusthuset, Yxskaftkälen 6,000
  4. Beppemuséet, Öhn 5,000
  5. Raukasjö Fjällgård 3,600
  6. Rid i Jorm / Korpens Öga, Jormvattnet 3,000
  7. Frostviken Keramik, Häggnäset 3,000
  8. Lapplia Bygdemuséum, Skansnäset 2,500
  9. Bilmuséet, Hoting 1,975
  10. Korallgrottan 400
