[edit] Steel Detailer → Steel detailer

Greetings.

Regarding your nomination of the above redirect, please rest assured that, at least when it comes to redirects, we're not that picky. As a general rule, redirects which are based on plausible typos or mispellings, or which are based on alternate capitalization, are kept as being useful. Basically, if you can imagine someone typing in the word or phrase of the redirect article ("Steel Detailer", say) in hopes of finding the target article ("Steel detailer"), then we keep the redirect. Redirects are cheap, both in terms of bandwidth and disk usage, so it's not a problem having a few of them scattered around.

Given all of the foregoing, I have taken the liberty of closing your RFD nomination as a "speedy keep." If you have any questions about this (or, really, any other aspect of Wikipedia), please feel free to ask, either here in response to me, or on my own talk page.

All the best.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I suspected that it would be a keep, but I wanted to nominate it in any case because my sense of order and neatness demanded it. :) I'm new to Wikipedia editing, but my understanding is that a search for "Steel Detailer" would have found "Steel detailer" even if the redirect didn't exist. Still, as long as they're cheap... Stormraven 00:53, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
    • You are indeed correct. A search on "Steel Detailer" would have found the page even if the redirect didn't exist. But without the redirect, you wind up with the "Search results 1-10 out of 387" page, with "Steel detailer" at the top if you type in "Steel Detailer" in the search bar and hit "enter" or click "Go".
And we all know how painful that can be.
You have now gained 5 experience points in your "Wikipedia Knowledge" skill. Use them wisely.

I was reminded of this recently while working on Medical technologist. A quirky feature of mediawiki is that if you init-cap a search term, it case-insensitively matches article titles. Thus, "Medical Technologist" will navigate directly to "Medical technologist", without executing a search and without need for a redirect at "Medical Technologist". Similarly, "Steel Detailer" requires no redirect to navigate instantly to "Steel detailer" . In an astonishing act of disrespect for my fellow admin, I have speedy-deleted "Steel Detailer" as a pointless redirect. Demi T/C 20:46, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Ah, so my initial instinct was correct, then. A quick test has confirmed Demi's assertion: searching for "Steel Detailer" jumps directly to "Steel detailer" without the redirect. Thanks, Demi! Stormraven 13:31, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sigil

Interesting edit you made on the Heroes article. However, could you use a better word than "Sigil"? dposse 18:05, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I considered "Signs," but that seemed too ambiguous. I checked a thesaurus for other options but didn't see any I liked. Do you have a suggestion? My main thrust was that the section "The Mark" didn't belong under the section "The Symbol," since the two are apparently unrelated. --Stormraven 18:49, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
The reason i asked is because i had to go to Merriam Webster and look up "Sigil". I had no idea what it meant, and i'm not sure anyone else will either. Besides, the two symbols in Heroes have nothing to do with Magic or astrology. [1] dposse 00:39, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
My meaning would be more in the vein of definition 1, "Seal, signet," which also isn't completely accurate, but which could be taken by extension to mean figure or character if one was imaginative and forgiving enough. :) Nevertheless, since someone else has added the eclipses to the section, I've changed it to "Recurring images," which seems far more appropriate to me in any case. --Stormraven 03:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Understood! Thanks. Oh, and thanks for your support of my edit about the symbol on the talk page. ^_^ dposse 03:52, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
